Sigma non-dg Super ef-500

When I bought my D70 (used) it came with the Simga EF-500 Super NA

(non-DG) flash unit.

I can use it as an off-camera Slave, but what are my other options?

Is it possible to somehow re-chip it to be compatible with the D70?

Also, when I got the camera the built in flash didnt work. Ive had

it repaired so thats now ok. I think the previous owner damaged

the internal flash by using it normally, which Nikon warns against.

Sigma corp. confirmed that my unit is not compatible with the D70

but that I should be able to use it normally although you may not

get correct exposures.

I downloaded the user manual for the DG version which Sigma corp.

says is more or less the same as the non-DG. Is this correct?

Andy,

Rechipping Sigma flash would perhaps cost more than a new compatible flash, if that was even possible.

You have all the problems covered and answered yourself.

As for Sigma opinion: "the user manual for the DG version which Sigma corp. says is more or less the same as the non-DG. Is this correct?"

Yes this is pretty much correct, unfortunately! The DG early Sigma models failed to deliver on many aspects of compatibility with digital cameras, e. g. Nikon iTTL poor and limitted perfoprmance (near 2 years old information !) Possibly newest Sigmas are better on compatibility and set of features. After market flashes will remain ... after market.
