jameswrightson
I picked up this lens a week ago. It initially worked fine on my D80: auto-focus wasn't as snappy as my 24/2.8D, but seemed accurate enough. This morning, the auto-focus started to stutter. It was having trouble shifting between near and far focus, and eventually stopped working altogether. Now the lens tries to focus and makes a faint buzzing sound, but the motor seems unable to shift the elements. Manual focus works fine, and the camera still focuses the 24/2.8 perfectly. I tried wiping the Sigma's contacts with a microfiber cloth - no improvement. I've read here about focusing inaccuracies and the D200 bug, but not complete failures like this. I'll be taking the lens back to the shop this week. In the meantime, any similar experiences or suggestions?
rainer_t
Sounds like a dead HSM drive. Take it back to where you got it from.
Matt Laur
While you're waiting to take it back, make sure that the electrical contacts on the camera body and the lens are both clean. As young as it is, that seems like an unlikely issue, but it could be that simple.
harvey_edelstein1
James yours is the third post about the Sigma 30mm this week. I think you should read the other posts and see if they have similar serial numbers. It may be a bad batch or design flaw.
vivek iyer
Matt nailed it. Keep your tools clean.

jameswrightson
Thanks for the responses. I read the other posts. For what it's worth, the serial number is 2019821. Contacts appear clean, and my other lens focuses fine. The Sigma's been mounted all week, and only had light use in clean environments. A dead HSM drive seems likely: the lens is receiving a signal but seems to be encountering a mechanical obstruction or malfunction.
ajay_ukidve1
I have the sigma 30/1.4. I use it prolifically on my D70s. Wonderful results no problems at all. Here comes the bad part it does not work on my daughters D80 but works on my wifes D80. Just cannot explain this anamoly.Appears there is a reverse engineering glitch. Try it on a D70 if it works then problem is not in the lens. If it doesnt then send it back.
jameswrightson
Returned the lens to the shop, which sent it in for service. It has worked perfectly since. No idea what was wrong.
