Sigma 10-20

Im looking for some wide lens. I found this

Ive heard that its a lottery to get a good one that works fines. True?

I have one and it's my most used lens. I've had no problems with it, and I'm not easy on equipment. I usually destroy about one lens a year.

I also have it, am perfectly satisfied with the first one I received, and use it far more often than I thought I would (and on <a href="http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?topic_id=1481&msg_id=00NcTo&photo_id=6727592&photo_sel_index=0"><b>subjects that I wouldn't have guessed I would</b></a>). I understand that the early sample variation issue that came up when it was very first shipped are a thing of the past. You will really enjoy the ability to go to 10mm, believe me.

Not only Sigma, but every other lens manufacturer works within what they consider to be "allowable" tolerances. In other words, not every lens that leaves the factory is identical.

 

In an ideal world, every lens would be inspected and adjusted to zero tolerance. However, we don't live in an ideal world and such inspections and adjustments would add appreciably to the cost of the lens.

 

What often happens is that an error of (for example) +.001mm on one element is cancelled out by an error of -.001mm on another. Where the problems arise is when several elements are all +.001 or -.001.

 

Couple an "out of tolerance" lens with a body having its sensor out of tolerance and the errors really start to compound. This stuff can drive you crazy if you let it.

 

I've had lenses from Nikon, Leica and Tokina that were as sharp as I've I've seen. I've also had to return lenses from each of these manufacturers that were not up to my expectations.

 

While I don't own a Sigma 10-20, it's not because of worrying about getting a bad example. Just be sure to purchase from a source that will allow you to return a bad example if you lose the "lottery".

Absolutely superb lens, highly recommended.

 

You will find many previous posts comparing it with Nikon, Tokina etc.

 

If you use a D40/D40x this is the only available independent wide zoom that will retain AF etc, due to inbuilt HSM motor.

Daniel, I have this lens and I'd say it's about as sharp as the Nikon 17-55. Not quite the color and contrast of that lens, just a notch below. I love it.

I have one. At the longer end, distortion control is excellent. Colour is generally good, as is sharpness and contrast. 10mm means you can do some interesting stuff!

Just a word of caution, notice in the corner of the Amazon link, the word Beach Camera, this is one of the non trusted sites, if you got a lemon, probably you will have problems with return or exchange. Just my two cents.

Wow!... Really?.. i saw the Reputation, and they have 97%. I know, is not 100, but 97 is not bad.:-p... now that u tell me that, ill look for another seller

FWIW, I bought a lens from Beach Camera a few years ago and had a problem with it, they exchanged it, no problem.

I have both the nikon 12-24 and the sigma 10-20, I use the 10-20 all the time. I find it keeps vertical lines far straighter than the 12-24... Buy the 10-20 you wont be disappointed!

Anybody bought it from us1photo.com? They have a pretty good rating from

resellerratings.com, they promise it's not gray market, that it's US Warranty product, and

their price on this lens is EXTRAORDINARY! I'm thinking of treating myself.

beach camera has a very high resellerrating score, btw -- above 9.
