sebastian_shaw1
I am going to the shanghai gp next month and I am not sure if i should bother bringing my eos 30 with me. The longest lens i can bring with me will be in the 70/300 or 100/300 range, i have not yet bought one since I am not sure. I don't think I will be able to get decent photos of the actual racing with those lenses from the grandstand anyway. It's a good disntance away from the track and there will probably be some sort of protective fence or net set up between the spectators and the track. Should I bother with my slr or stick with my canon powershot s40 for casual snapshots?
mark newcombe www.mcnphoto
If your going to watch and enjoy and your not bothered really about the racing, or don't have a 300mm just take the compact it'll be easier to carry round. zackojones
I don't know about the GP's but for the AMA and other races here in the states there are times when you can go down into the pits and take pictures of the bikes, riders, and umbrella girls :) so if you'll have an opportunity to do that I would take the better camera. If you don't think you'll be able to get down in the pit area leave it at home and take the smaller camera.
John Crowe
The minimum for racing from the grandstands is generally 400mm on film. A 300mm lens could be effective for shots with more background blur or you could just end up cropping more. While you are right about the fencing there are times when you might be surprised to find that there is a vantage point available that looks over the fence. If you do not own a 300mm lens yet then I would wait until next year or the next racing event. Check out the track fully this time around so you know what you need the next time around. Have an amazing time!
