john_morris4
Why? So they can't shoot back?
john_sidlo
studies have shown that 77 times out of 83, front shots are better than back shots...
solja
If you shoot someone from the back, do you have to get a model release from them, assuming their head wasn't turned to the side?
I can just imagine, "Hi, I took a photo of you from back there. I liked your butt, I would like to use it in my portfolio. Can you sign this please?" :)

twmeyer
Jay Meisel has made a fortune with photographs of people that are unidentifiable, either through use of silhouette, rear views (haha Jeff) or the turned away face. Aside from the obvious (no model release required), faceless people can become symbols rather than individuals. The viewer can put themselves or someone they know, or a fantasy personality into that human form... t
john_sidlo
Jeff's pic falls into the class of the other 6 of 83.

back_alley_.
i shot this old gent because he so reminded me of one of my grandfathers. he walked so slowly and always seemed bent over a bit. i believe some people shoot from the rear because it feels safer. Brad_
From the back - probably makes little difference here.

www.citysnaps.net

allgone
It's not really an acceptable POV at my paper. This is the only shot I've ever done from the back. This woman's son was one of the first casualties in the War on Afganistan, the girls in the photo had lost their father. It's perhaps the only time I've ever felt I couldn't accomplish an assignment. This is all I could turn in.

back_alley_.
and sometimes from the back is the only way to go.
nesrani
There can be many reasons, I suppose, but from the point of view of storytelling, shooting from the back can project the viewer into the subject's inner world. A bit like the figures in video games.

larry n.
Sorry for the off-topic technical question: does anyone have a hint on how to insert an actual picture, and not just a link?
travis1
Naji, prepare your picture 500x500 or smaller in each dimension. ;)
