Shi'ite Ashura celebrations London

bds1

Recommended Posts

Ashura celebrates the martyrdom of Hassan and Hussein, Imam Ali's sons. Ali was at

the origin of the first shism within Islam. Passions run high during these celebrations:

faithfuls flog themselves with chains, or beat their chests.

Harvey, I am an atheist myself but your comments are intolerant: this is a major and solemn Shia religious anniversary. How would you like someone calling members of a Catholic procession loonies for dressing up and carrying pictures of a martyred Christ?

Come on mods!

Brian, I like your February anti-war and Man U folders. I'll never forget it: 2 million marching together for peace and against imperialism: truly a once in a lifetime event.

Get your Leica cleaned, oiled and ready, fill your pockets with Ilford... get ready for Thursday. 200,000 Brits have a special welcome for a certain genocidal, pretzel-wrestling illiterate!

"I'd have no problem with that at all"

To be honest, neither would I. :-)

Sorry, but sometimes it's hard to tell where people are coming from on these boards.

Brian: I have never seen such an event in London and am quite curious. Was it in Speakers Corner? Was it impromptu? How large was the gathering?

No major terrorist attacks since 9-11? Try telling that to the families of the 187 people killed in the Bali nightclub bombing that happened just over a year ago. I'm sure they will agree.

Or did you mean no major attacks in the US? Since there have only been two other major "terrorist" attacks on US soil ever (and one of those came from a US citizen). I'm not sure how much you can make of that statistic either.

Energetic photos though Brian.

"there hasn't been a major terrorist attack since 9-11"

There must be some considerable difference between the American and British meaning of the word 'major'. I suspect that several Australians would take considerable issue with such a statement, not to mention Turks, Israellis, Iraquis, and lots of others.

Yes Frank, the White Mans Burden certainly is heavy one.

Your grasp of economics and history is shockingly lacking, but in a way unsurprising, considering the constant barrage of ludicrous propaganda the average American is subjected to on a daily basis.

No major terrorist attacks since 9-11 what do you call almost 4000 civilian deaths in Afghanistan and up to 9700 civilian deaths in Iraq since 9-11 resulting directly from US aggression? Out of sight out of mind, eh? I suggest you visit this site to educate yourself: http://www.iraqbodycount.net/

This war and the Afghan campaign is about ensuring long term domination of the worlds central area of oil wealth for the US and denying it to a growingly unified EU (thats is why Germany and France are so against the war).

Like it or not, that is what the vast majority or human beings on this planet understand and believe, because it is based on very strong empirical, historical and economic evidence.

Sigh!

Frank that was me being civil. Read my post again: I never said the EU wasnt just as guilty of imperialist crimes as the US. They simply dont have the full spectrum dominance to carry out the same war crimes the US does on a regular basis (not yet anyway).

Please dont take this to be patronising, but I suggest you start pushing past the information you receive through your mass-media: challenge facts, search the web for different perspectives. Read into the history of US military interventions in the 20th century: Iran, Chile, Iraq, Panama, Somalia, Yugoslavia etc, etc. Since 1945 the United States has carried out extremely serious interventions into more than 70 nations.

Then maybe the next time your son, daughter, sister, brother, friend, workmate, cousin etc comes back from some foreign land in a body bag and Bush refuses to even turn up to their funeral, youll understand exactly what they lost their life for.

I'll leave it at that.

There he goes again, good old anti-France, anti-Germany, anti-EU blind

propagandist Frank P.

Frank, you've got to be kidding. Your naivety (I prefer to call it that) scares me to

death. So unselfish, the US in Iraq, that I'm sure Halliburton (and Brown and Root)

must have opened a bank account in Bagdad, and in Kabul. to provide some work for

the locals, and to deposit the billion dollars they will collect from the war.

As for Harvey and his «loonies» comments, this is one of the reasons why war and

terrorism rage. This arrogant, superior, scornful Westerner attitude.
