edgar_njari
I was just wondering, how much better is the 4-element lens in 107compared to the one in 104?
geoff_mcauliffe
Avoid Seagull cameras, they are poorly made. How much better or worse the lens is does not matter if the shutter fails (a common occurence).
aeaster
I must agree with Geoff, avoid Seagulls. I admit to owning one. I even have posted photos taken with it. When they work properly they are not too bad. But they are very poorly made and extremely unreliable. The first one I had lasted exactly two rolls of film before it broke. I took it back to the dealer and he did not even question what went wrong, he just accepted that it had crapped-out and handed me a new one. This one, while still functioning will chew up about every third roll of film. Someone on this forum said that winding a Seagull sounds like shaking a tin coffee can full of pebbles and that is an accurate description. Save your money and for the same price or less you can find a well-made classic TLR that was built to last years. Paying extra for a 4-element lens on a Seagull is like paying extra for a polished turd.
joename
I have a seagull, don't know which one, but a cheap one. I've had good experiences with it, no problems, and very good pictures. If I had to do all over again, I would have put another $50 with it, and bought a used yashicamat or something like that. The features you get with one of the older used ones, along with the better lenses, and durability will pay for itself. I still have this one, and use it when I REALLY don't care if it get destroyed :)
skygzr
I've personally known two of these cameras, and both died from a busted shutter within a year. To answer your question (kind of) the three-element lens is surprisingly good. Never used the other one.
john_layton
and for just a few dollars more than the Yashicamat - you might find a Rolleicord or even Rolleiflex T with a tessar lens - and you'll be one happy camper!
leeuwtje
Hi, I have an old Seagull 104 and actually like it. The screen is much brighter than my Yashica 124G and I can't see the difference in slide result. Picked it up for $50,- at Ebay... stephen hazelton
They had a review two or three years ago in Shutterbug. They said the 4-element lens was slightly more contrasty than the 3- element. Evidently, not a whole lot of difference.
