christian_olivet
I have just received a 210mm G Claron and a 355 G Claron. The 210mm. stops down to f90 but the 355 stops down to f32. It seems to me, according to all I have read about these process lenses, that they need to be stopped down at least to F22 for far away subjects. How come the 355 only stops to f32. It seems that in order to get maximum depth of field on lens that long on would need more than that. Is anyone out there using this lens on the field? Does yours stop down to f32 too? Is it enough on an 8x10 camera? Thanks for your input!
john_boeckeler
Mine stops down to f90, and it has ample coverage for 8 x 10.
pvp
Your lens may have an f/stop scale that is for a different lens.
jerald_brodkey
Mine goes down to f/64. I bought it with a Copal shutter and at least this lens was never intended to be other than a photographic lens......... Jerry
jerald_brodkey
I should add than it has an image circle of 444 and I use it regularly on 11X14.
c_p_goerz
If your lens is in a 'barrel' it may be an enlarger setting in which case the stops of smallest size would be about 32. If your lens is in a shutter and the blades make a small sized aperture at F32 then the scale and focal length of the lens do not match. Its not the end of the world and a calculator and a bit of masking tape is all you need to sort it out. CP Goerz
william_marderness1
When I got mine in a Copal 3 shutter, the f-stops were marked to f 64. The lens, however, stops down more than what was marked on the shutter. I sent it to S. K. Grimes, who engraved f-stops to f 128.
christian_olivet
How funny and at the same time not so funny. I checked the lens once again and realized it doesn not have a shutter. It does have the diafragm ring that closes to f32 but I would guess it is a barrel mounted lens. I bought this one through ebay and now I wonder if I should sell it and get one in a shutter or buy a brand new shutter and install it. The glass on the lens is flawless. øyvinddahle
What are you going to use the lenses for? I have a shutterless 305 wich I intend to use as a normal on 8x10" and a long lens for 4x5". Behind it's 58mm diameter, so I'm using a ND3, on the front is a 62, and I can use a pola to reduce the light even more. To find out wheter your 355 stops down to 32: measure with a camera and compare to another lens. If you need a shutter, sell it, or see if it gives you acceptable sharpness/contrast and have it considered mounted by S Grimes. Mine version will fit a Compound #2, but not a Copal #1, so I wouldnt bother finding one for mine. The 210 should cover 8x10" at 22 or 32!
