Scanning Negatives - Concerns Over Drying & Damage

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone,

I've been scanning some archived negatives from 1970's. I was recently talking to someone about scanning them and they said to me :

"I am concerned about the double-scanning--meaning each time the negatives are handled and scanned they dry out a little more"

Now I'm not a master technician but I've been shooting film for 6-7 years and I've never heard of anything like this. I'm using archival gloves to handle everything and everything is stored in dust free sleeves, away from sunlight in a constant temperature. But this statement seems totally stupid to me.

I am really hoping to know what you guys think.

"...they dry out a little more."

A negative would "dry out" more under the hot incandescent bulb in an enlarger, than the cool light of a scanner.

The statement makes no sense to me. Tell him to explain in detail what he is talking about. And have him explain it until you understand what he is talking about.

Sometimes people will repeat a phrase, without understanding what they are saying.

It is like the advertisement of 2 ladies talking.

#1 says "You know what they say about high fructose corn syrup."

#2 says "What do they say?"

#1 looks puzzled, and does not say anything. Cuz she does not know what they say.
