SB 800 and Nikon D2H

I am due to attend a indoor dinner gathering with normal indoor room bulb

lighting - plan to use the D2H with SB 800 and 85 mm f/1.4. lenses to cover my

friends, moving kids etc. Generally, I have not liked using a flash because I

feel it makes the ambience/brightness on the face of the photographs a bit

unnatural. However, I want to learn and optimise the use of my SB 800 and

enhance the foto quality with some advice from my experienced friends. Any

thoughts suggestion on the SB800 and D2H (on P settings, I am comfortable with

this) would be welcome.

I also have a 55-200 mm f 4-5.6 and a 12-24 mm Nikkor f/4 but then I do not

think the auto focus performance will be good indoors.

The diffusion cap works well indoors, or outdoors when working in close with a wide angle lens. It gives very even, natural looking light with good shadow control. The cap should be pointed straight up or tilted 45 degrees toward the subject - never pointed directly at the subject. If it's a little hot or dark, use the compensation setting in the flash. I usually keep it at -2/3 stop for events.

If you would like more of the room light in the picture, use "slow sync". You will need to use the amber gel and the diffusion cap for best results.

If you don't use slow flash, the shutter will not go any slower than 1/60 (the value is set in the CSM menu). I've never used "P" mode, but it should work fine. I prefer "A", "M" (with a flash meter) or "S". You realize that the shutter speed has no effect on an SB800 (as long as it is 1/250 or slower) - only the aperture affects flash exposure, along with the power setting of the flash.
