Renewal

Recommended Posts

After some hesitation, I renewed.

The site may not be what it once was, but I generally feel more at home here than on some of the rough equivalents.

However, I hesitated to renew because the default is automatic renewal in the future unless you consciously quit.

I am not so sure that I will WANT to renew in another year, and wish this were given as an option, not a default.

I'm contemplating leaving after 6 years. I'm confused. Why should I pay for a product that admittedly has its problems? Funding an experiment is not what my vision of this site is. Every time I go to this site there's a navigational issue! I'm logged in, I'm not logged in. Loading issues from page to page. There are Photographers that post images here that I can only dream of producing as there are some of the best images in the Photographic world here, but whats with the chick shots getting the nod by the mods? Are you kidding me? It's probably a generational issue of taste and aesthetic conditioning from a world gone by, I don't know, all I know is that this site is not being revered as well as the talent that enters it by its conductors and we've been patient enough to give time to the technical issues. As for the, "Old Gang," have you not noticed, much of the, "Old Gang," is out of here. What's left? Think about that.

Don, I have come to look at PN somewhat like a casino. Every time I try to win the odds of having an entire session without some old nuisance, or a new one presenting. It's very much like gambling. What browser today will allow me to upload photos? Will I be able to load more than one to a post before an error message--or the jackpot of the entire set? Can I click on an email link advising me of some member shenanigans without it rapidly reloading and reloading and reloading and...

This place is much cheaper than a casino, and the overall odds a bit higher. I also like to imagine that the people here smell better too! :p

How do I turn off auto renewal and/or change a credit card # to charge to? Or cancel my membership? I have no user control over any payment options and I'm frustrated.

My card got charged a few days ago for a renewal, but I keep seeing "upgrade to premium" banners on my profile screens.

It appears that my payment is not being applied to my account.

This happened last year too and after several emails back and forth I just gave up as the admin stated that he could not find my transaction and just quit responding to my inquiries. As far as I can tell, I've been charged for two years now for a basic (free) membership. I've been a paid member since 2011.

There is no contact information on this site. How do I contact an admin who can help sort this out?

I note that I am up for renewal on the 10th of next month. Whatever info might have been present before will no longer apply, as my payment account information has changed. Frankly, I am a bit hesitant to click the button--not knowing if payment will be properly applied. But I discovered another glaring issue while checking this out.

I needed to make a change in my "profile" bio, but I note that there is no longer any functional access to edit anything from that page. Rather, it now appears to be a function of my 'Account' settings. So, I change the bio information. Guess what? Although it saves it there, changes have ABSOLUTELY no effect on the actual profile page itself. I delete everything from Bio. The old stuff is still there.

So, before I spend money to renew a subscription, perhaps it would be appropriate to find a way to have information about me that I want. Can this be fixed, or have things become so complicated that I just cannot figure out the Rubik's Cube solution to the problem? :p

Can you be more specific about your navigational issues - last week we fixed the issue of when you are logged in and go to the home page so that should no longer be an issue. Loading issues - what issues are you experiencing? Photos of beautiful women tend to get more attention so photos that get more attention trend higher - plus our demo is 75% male. if you find those offensive, I would suggest favoriting only the photographers you enjoy seeing photos of and viewing photo.net through "my favorites>photographers" this will only show you their most recent uploads. Happy to help in any way I can.

Oddly enough (but really not so much for how things work here) I revisited my profile page about 8 hours later--and the info (or should I say lack thereof as I deleted it) had caught up to whatever it needed to. It now seems to immediately post whatever mindless tripe I put in the bio box. Whether someone assisted, the hand of god was at work, or pure serendipity--that is now done and can stay the way it is until this site is gone, or I am dead--whichever comes first.

Maybe in a couple days I will give the renewal button a pump. I have until the 10th of next month.

@donbright You might try going to your 'Account' page and electing to "hide nude images" and see if that reduces the number of so-called 'glamour shots' presented. That is a much better option than creating the very limited insular bubble suggested above.

Papa Tango brought up good points regarding the profile page as I had the same problem. Changes were not being saved. Info, even background color in the portfolio won't save. Again, keeping, holding a sign in is intermittent. Loading time between pages long and can time out and no I'm not changing settings to miss out on the girls, The Photography here is the best. Just fix the place! Is the template too complicated to fix? I don't know I'm not a computer tech and I've noticed all that have provided high levels of technical advice have reached no avail. Again, to renew here with the issues that everyone is familiar with as there's no point in citing issue by issue, the purchase would be what? Living in perpetuity within discussions like this? Don, I could never get the header image in my personal 'working portfolio' to stick past the current session. I quit trying, except for an occasional random effort to play the game. Always lost, so it was a happy thing when the GUI for that page eliminated the header, reorganized the images in a better tiled mosaic, and became useful. Now if I could only set a default sort there like we can in the galleries--it would be much better.

You are correct about the density of nude (or nearly so) art. We have a small handful of what I term 'prolific posters' whom as far as I can tell do not participate further in PN than to load regular and periodic assemblies of such photos to their galleries--and then submit the whole glut of them for 'critique.' When we combine that with the honest fact that many of the denizen here would rather look at buttocks & breasts over landscapes or cute pets--we have the perfect storm for promoting such images to dominate the funnel.

At some level, I envy those photographers. Whether situated in a working environment that provides models for their art--or loaded with disposable cash to hire models--the outcome is the same. Lots of nude Nancy's. Unfortunately, my wife has made it quite clear to me that I AM NOT TO SPEND ANY MONEY ON NAKED WOMEN, OR ANY TIME WITH THEM--whatever the purported purpose. She was very emphatic on this point, and clearly described certain bad outcomes regarding my future living arrangements should I choose to disregard her warning.

Hence, I will not be contributing to the issue...

Oh, and one further point. The subscriber/renewal system is whacked. Even if you have Premium privileges, the code that runs this place does not translate that to getting rid of the 'upgrade now' nag messages. This has been complained about in other threads.

AND DO NOT renew early! Again, the thing is unable to sort out that you have time left on your current subscription. Renew four weeks early (as I just thought to do) and you will find that the system will not recognize that you have time left. Your subscription cycle will run one year from the date you pay up--not a year forward from the end of your current subscription period.

You gotta love the little idiotsyncracies... :p

Facing automatic renewal in the future (and having to rely on requesting ad-hoc fixes) is one of the reasons I did not renew. I don't use any of the services of paid membership, but continued to pay for many years because I enjoyed photo.net. I can always start again if things improve, particularly if the "Unified Forum" comes back.

Hector, two things to know on this. First, if you pay via PayPal and have an account--you can cancel the renewal agreement right after making your payment.

Second, if you click on "New Posts" in the forum tools menu bar, it does the same thing that used to be "Unified Forum." All of the latest posts from every board in PN will appear there--with an added bonus of showing you which ones have not changed since your last visit.

I didn't want to go into this, but for me, "New Posts" is a mess, with the order constantly changing, and zombie post coming back to life every time someone decides to grace one with a comment. I value you and others who are still here; I remember how glad I was that JDM returned to photo.net after an absence, but it's much less enjoyable with so many people who taught me things now gone.

I got a message today about auto-renewal which i don't want to do. Photo-net when I do go near it does not meet my needs. Having my account forcible upgraded comes quite close to my definition of theft. How do I opt out or cancel my account or take some other action to not have this charge levied.

Forcing people into an upgrade and charging them for it feels a lot like having my pocket picked.

Hopefully if nothing else works I will be able to dispute this charge with my bank.

Hi - I received the same email out of the blue today. I have not used photo.net in years. How do I close my account? There seems to be no way of closing the account and they are forcing me to pay a subscription I do not want. This has to be illegal. Any help gratefully received.

Investigating this now - we did not send that email. More soon.

There is no way to close/cancel account.

If the email is real, then that is illegal and is the equivalent to stealing $29.95 from each member.

Real or not, there should be an easy way to close/cancel an account.

If there is any identity theft, this could be a huge and very expensive issue for photo.net
