brian_mchattie
quite recently I used a tutorial I found on the web to remove a background from a portrait. One of the last steps in the tut showed how to get rid of what I would term as "ghosting" around most of the edges of the portrait. I did not bookmark the tut and for the life of me I just cannot find anything like it. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
Ed_Ingold
The book, "Photoshop Masking and Composition" by Katrin Eismann is the principal reference on this topic. https://www.amazon.com/Photoshop-Masking-Compositing-Voices-Matter/dp/0321701003
brian_mchattie
thanks Ed..... Although the book seems a bit dated, I have ordered ordered it.
Ed_Ingold
Dated? I prefer to think "timeless." It takes a lot of work to mask subject without leaving artifacts, even with a plain or colored background. Yet that is done routinely for advertisements and catalogs (and movies).
brian_mchattie
perhaps dated was the wrong word. However I am quite sure it will will be a useful addition to my library of photography books and of course I will read it. On a lighter note, I ordered it from Amazon and it appears the book will take 4/6 weeks to get to me here in Norway. I could have got an earlier delivery from Amazon UK but at almost twice the price, I can wait a few weeks.
Ed_Ingold
LOL. I'm not a semanticist, but I play one on the internet. Good reading!
Glenn McCreery
I see a few used copies of the book on eBay for as low as $4.
bgelfand
Katrin Eismann's book is excellent. Martin Evening writes on the subject in his book Adobe Photoshop CS5 for Photographers (see chapter 9 specifically edge detection and refine edge starting on page 473). Charles_Webster
You need to worry about more than the edge fringe, there are straight-line artifacts around her hair in 2 or 3 places. They stand out more than the fringing.
brian_mchattie
With respect Charles, I am aware of that and the posted image was intended only for the edges around the subject. That is not an image I would submit anywhere else
