Recommend a lightweight travel stand

Recommended Posts

Please recommend a good, lightweight stand for remote shooting

locations and travel.<br>

Currently, I have a big, heavy Bogen light stand for indoor/studio

use but I need something I can take outdoors, to the beach or haul

around for extended periods. I'd like something with a similar

sturdiness of the Bogen but lightweight. I'll be using a Chimera XS

softbox and a small battery powered monolight so load capacity isn't

a big deal. Since I plan on using the light stand at the beach

aluminum is preferred.

Bogen makes aluminum light stands. Even the heavy-duty stand weighs less than 6 pounds and extends to 13 feet.

Your problems mount rapidly using any stand outdoors, especially with a soft box. You will need a leg leveler and possibly sand bags for safety (there go the weight savings). You might need to attach an assistant to the stand if more than a light breeze occurs.

Wind's a reality in my world..rarely, but often enough that attaching stands to camera luggage makes sense. It's embarassing at best when the damned things tip over. I've not figured out the best way to do it, but it'll eventually involve velcro straps.

Kevin, what kind of "small battery powered monolight" are you using? I'm looking for something like that...
