Rebel Ti Focus Point

In testing a Rebel Ti, I noticed that the lowest focus point seems

to work only when it is manually selected. Otherwise, the camera

will not focus on a low, horizontally-centered foreground object

until the object moves vertically to the center of the viewfinder.

When I select the lowest focus point manually, the camera focuses on

the low foreground object without a problem. Is this typical of the

Rebel Ti or other EOS cameras, or is this particular camera

defective?

I have one and the answer according to the manual:

"The AF point can be selected automatically by the camera

or manually by you. In the basic zone modes and A-dep mode,

the af point selection is automatic only. in the P,TV,AV,M

modes the af point can be selected either automatically or

manually"

Now it never says how it figures out which af point to use!

I just tried it in one of the basic zone modes and pointed it

at an object against a white wall and it determined the correct

focus point...it was the only object in the frame. Even if the

object was way left or right in the frame it could do it..neat.

Pointing it a wall of shelves full of things it lit up almost

all of the af points at once...looks like focus was fine.

I mostly shoot in AV or M and manually set the af point

when I turn it on.

Thanks for pointing this out, or I would never have noticed. And I just checked mine and it never focuses on the bottom point (when held horizontal) or the far-left point (when held vertical). I tested it in Auto and A-Dep modes. They must've just assumed that people shooting in those modes will be framing everything in the center.
