promotional band photos

Hello all. This hardrock/metal band from out of town wants me to do

some promotional photos for them. They want me to take the pics and

do the type (design). They want 1000 8x10 black and white copies.

That's no big deal but they also want to know if they can pay extra

to share the copyright so they can print them. I don't mind typing

up a contract and sharing the copyright, but I have no idea what to

charge. I've never had a job like this yet. They have their own

website and it looks like they already had two albums. They might

get famous! ha ha. Have you ever had a job like this or know anyone

that has and how much do you think I should charge. Any input would

greatly help me out....thanks.

Jen, If you think they might become famous, you might want to exchange limited use copyright for model releases from all the band members.

If they are going to become famous, you'd be better off with royalty payments negotated for each use of the image. Out and out buying the image should be expensive, especially if they might hit it big. Licensing it has the benefit of costing them less if they don't go far, and making you more if they do go far. Depending on the sort of people they are, you can explain it just like that, as a win-win sort of arrangement, and try to build an ongoing relationship with the group.
