keith_merrill
Howdy all, I am looking at buying into a flash system and have narrowed my choices down to the Profoto Acute2 and the Dyna-lite lines. I have been spending quite a bit of time researching on the net and asking people I know about lighting systems (I do not have anywhere remotely local to put my hands on these products). Since getting a lighting system is like getting into a camera system, I want to be sure to get it right from the beginning. I have narrowed my search down to a pack and head system, relatively lightweight, professionally built, nice lighting quality, extensive line of lighting modifiers and the ability to add on to the system as needed. My real questions are about the customer service and the ability to get repairs done in a timely, professional manner. Does anybody have any experience dealing with these companies when it comes to repairs, or questions on products? Is one better than the other, or relatively the same. I just don't want to end up buying into a lighting system from a company that doesn't help out a customer when needed. Also, if you have any advice on what to avoid with this stuff would be much appreciated. Thanks a bunch.
ellis_vener_photography
Both are very professional units. The big difference is the cost of components when you go to repair. two years ago I spoke with several professional electronic flash repair shops in New York City, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston & Los Angeles who all confirmed that the Profoto gear can be very expensive to repair based on the cost ofthe components. Noi thatthe components are necessarily different from components used in say elinchrom or Balcar justthat profoto charges much more forthem. for exampleTwice as much for a capacitor compared to the same component in a Balcar pack. Things might have changed since then and Dyna-Lite and Profoto will definitely use different components. <P>But as I said at the beginning: both are very professional lines of gear and will give you years of great service and support. Two definite advantages to the Profoto Acute 2R units are the incorporation of an LPA Design Pocket Wizard receiver into the pack and the bi- voltage switchign ability (useful if you travel). Dyna-Lite has been in business a long time and has a terrific reputation for supporting professionals.
