Portrait Samples - 105mm f/2 DC and 105mm f/2.8 VR

  1. Hi All,
I am testing out some lenses this weekend, thinking toward my next purchase, and I've been reading up on previous threads comparing the 105mm f/2 DC and the 105mm f/2.8 VR. I am wondering if some of you would post portraits you've taken using either of these lenses (or both) along with the basic specs.
    Thanks!
    Caitlin

  2. I'm not sure what you expect to see in web-size files, but here are a few from the 105/2.8 VR Micro (click to see them bigger and with EXIF data on Flickr):

  3. wow.makes me want to run out and purchase one.

  4. Sigma also has a nice 105 and a nice 150, but neither are VR.

  5. You should be aware of the well-documented autofocusing problems (and potential remedies) people have with the 105/2 DC on digital. Mine is no exception. You may find a search of archives to be informative. Regardless of such problems I won't rid myself of the 105/2 DC.

  6. Mmmm, my 105VR on the D700 focus pretty good... reasonably fast and accurate:

love my 105 f/2 DC. Those two were made during paintball game with D200 iso200 f/2.8 if I'm not mistaken.

    The 105DC.

    And a crop.

  9. Thanks so much to all the posters and in advance to those who have yet to post. To those using the DC, are you using the defocus control to fine-tune the background and/or foreground on the images posted, or are you setting the defocus control to neutral?
    Thanks!

  10. Taken with 105mm f/2.0 DC, mounted on a D200. f3.5, 1/500sec, iso100. I've never used the DC feature; periodically I experiment with it, but don't see much difference honestly. But I do love this lens! I considered the getting Micro-Nikkor VR when I was shopping for a 105mm, but decided the extra stop was more important to me than VR or macro focusing.

  11. these photos are awesome!
there have recently been at least a couple of threads on the 105 nikkors, but i can't access one thread (the link I get in my search results doesn't work) and the other thread has little discussion comparing the 105 f/2.5 AI-S and the 105 VR and DC. how do y'all think the 2.5 compares with these two lenses?

  12. 105DC. It's rendition goes beyond the technical to a flattering rendering of human and other living subjects. It has very fast focussing for a screw driven lens. It displays focussing issues on some FX Nikon cameras such as the D700, but AF Fine Tune usually clears up the problem. In this forum there's a very long post concerning this subject. It's my favorite lens and my first choice for people. Nikon's DC lenses are produce the prettiest portraits of any Nikon glass - this is their sole purpose.
