Plaubel Peco Supra II

Plaubel-

There is almost no info on Plaubel View Camera equipment out

there, but as a Buff and a user of a Plaubel Peco Universal III

View Camera I can tell you the following.

First, I have a PDF of the Plaubel Supra II Brochure, so if you

email me I will send it to you.

Plaubel View Cameras, were among the best made in the

1950's and the 1960's. They were the choice for many studio

photographers in the early 1960's and were extremely

expensive-more so than Linhof and Sinar. The wholesale price

of a 4x5 Peco Universal III (Their "Flagship") was more than the

retail price of a Sinar Norma 4x5.

All, Plaubels are of extremely heavy "Germanic" construction and

the attention to detail (when you get yours just look at the leather

inserts on the knobs) and construction rival Linhof's.

Your Supra uses the same Lens Boards as the Peco series of

view cameras, and boards are extremely hard to find. Actually

anything Plaubel is extremely hard to find in the USA. Plaubels,

are always very inexpensive becuase accessories are so hard to

find, and nobody really knows about them.

Olden Camera in NYC, was the distributer in the Supra

II/Universal III era, and Arnie Duren who owns Brooklyn Camera

Exchange was the sales manager at the time. He informed me

that the camera was the choice of studio Fashion photographers

at the time (he related a story to me about selling 5 of them to

one at the time huge fashion photographer).

If you purchased the outfit I think you did (listed in the classifieds)

you got a great deal. The only thing you will have a hard time

finding is the wide angle bellows (if you are so inclined).

Some accessories interchange between the newer Peco Profia

Cameras (more common on ebay and from dealers) but there is

a thickness problem- lens boards and bellows share the same

mount, but are much thicker in the "Profia" era. You might have

to make adjustments on your supra. I have a "Profia" era sinar

lensboard adapter on my camera, and i had to make small

adjustments to the mounting flange to make it work.

I use my Plaubel for fun, I use my sinar for my professional work,

but there is a certain joy that comes from using these second

generation monorail cameras. The only weakness of the

Universal system- is its stupid method of joining rails. But you

need not worry about that, your Supra has the teloscoping rails

about 40 years earlier than the linhof tecnikardan.

If you have anymore questions, please feel free to email me.
