todd frederick
What is the difference between "pinup photography," "Figure photography," and "pornographic" photography...this is a question asked in all seriousness...I don't know...and I'm not against any of it. Just want a clarification and maybe a few visual samples of each variety.

abouddweck
Pin-up comes from the days of calendars or posters with pretty girls or movies stars. In the '30s and '40s, it was girls showing off their legs, like Betty Grable, by the 50's they were showing abit more, like Marilyn Monroe. They were called this because men would actually pin the photos to walls in locker rooms and work break areas (the simpler days, before sexual harassment suits). Figure photography is generally considered artful nudes. They have more of a sensual element than a sexual one. Think of nude statues and paintings. Pornography is sexually explicit photography designed to arouse the viewer. We're surrounded by it, a lot on the web and softer versions with every booty shaking female rap singer on MTV. I'll try to attach a nice figure study for you.

peter nelson
What is the difference between "pinup photography," "Figure photography," and "pornographic" photography...this is a question asked in all seriousness...I don't know...and I'm not against any of it. Just want a clarification and maybe a few visual samples of each variety.
Pinup photography is a kind of genre art the way science fiction, mysteries, and westerns are genre art. In other words they have long, well-established conventions and archetypes. Pinup photography is a style first widely introduced in the 1940's and 1950's and features playful, sexy, but not very revealing nudes. I've attached an example from my portfolio.
Figure art celebrates the human figure as an abstracttion, emphasizing form, light, texture, etc. It can be either male or female but is more commonly female because of social conventions. It's not a simple question of most photographers being men, either - I used to have male figure photos in my portfolio and it was my WIFE and other females in my life who objected, but they're perfectly happy with the females.
Pornography is designed specifically to be sexually arousing through explicit depictions of sex and sexual anatomy. A category you left out is "glamour" which is designed to be sexy also, but which is not usually very explicit.

bobar57
What line??? Pin up art these days is mixed in a blender with soft porno and sometimes outrageous degenerated "art".but anyway that is my point of view. For me art is something that take a manual camera, knowledge, work,no PhotoShop,no digital maneuver;like a painter. What is the merit of a painter using a projector to draw his lines and shades??Anyhow this is my personal opinion.Well,I deviated a bit of topic. Kim,are you the one from Canada, the iadoka guy?Small world!!!I'm Robert Armas from Miami Komei Jyuku(webmaster,Public Relations and Member)and I might email you later for some business Regards, Robert

linda_prieto
For everyone interested in pinup photography and to stop the confusion, I will give you an idea. One of the most famous pinup models was Bettie paige. To this day there is a large movement of people that model, imitate and live the lifestyle of pinup portayed by her, you can google her. It does not look anything like the modern sexy style almost soft porn photos, they are reminiscent of the 40's and 50's, and there are famous artist that did pinup art such as Varga and Elvgren(Google). Such as with burlesque queens, continuing the look today is Dita Von Teese. There is a huge multitude of people across the US that dress the part and live the lifestyle, such as myself, my hair is cut like Bettie paige and i run a side business in Vintage Bombshell clothing. I in turn am looking for a photographer to do my shoot in this style, but the majority are concentrated in California. You can find most of the girls photographed at Hot Rod events and anything associated with vintage and Tiki, Rockabilly events. Love to hear back, Anyone interested in a stylist for these shoots,(makeup, hair, wardrobe etc...) contact me here or at chinablonde@msn.com. and I am looking for my own photographer to work with and help me set up my web page.
