gerrymorgan
The Independent has published a set of nearly 300 photos taken in France in 1915, during the First World War. The photos are mostly of British soldiers. There is some mystery about them because neither the identity of the photographer nor the subjects is known.
The article, which contains a link to a slideshow of all 286 photos, is here .
Uncle Goose
Seems odd that they don't know who they were, there are various insignia visiable and any good WW1 insignia collector should be able to identify them. Of course it's possible that they didn't contact any good insignia collector as those guys tend to know more than any historian on this subject.
colin carron
Given the remoteness in time of WW I I am not at all surprised that the faces are not identifiable. There was a recent series on UK TV which tried to identify the remains of WWI soldiers by the tags, uniforems and other artefacts fond in their graves. It was surpriseingly difficult even with a lot of evidence. The last UK WWI soldier recently died and the people that knew them are getting fewer too. WWI is moving from being a memory to being history.

Gerry, a fascinating collection and article - thanks for posting.
mark cortella
Uncle Goose-perhaps you could email the people at this project and make your suggestion to them-perhaps they do not know this. What you suggested here.
