Photography in movies!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,
I'm sure this subject has been breached and broached repeatedly and in depth, but I thought I'd start it again.
Movies that you like with cameras in them (please exclude the blue titles....)!
In no particular order:

The Year of Living Dangerously
Road to Perdition
Shutter
Memento
I forgot Prison Song. Not much for plot but he has a Leica!

"The Edge" - 1997, brief scene of Alec Baldwin with Nikon F5.
"King Kong" - 1976, some scenes of Jeff Bridges with a Nikon F2.
"Gotcha!" - 1985, Anthony Edwards college movie with scenes including a Nikon FE/FM series + motor drive. A classic line is:

"Dad, can I borrow your camera?"
"It's not a camera, it's a Nikon...and it's out of the question."

The Public Eye - 1992, Joe Pesci playing a character based on Weegee. Gotta love the scene at the shootout with the 35mm camera (Exacta?) on a little skateboard doodad he rigged up to slide in and out of harm's way.

Johnny Skidmarks - 1998, Peter Gallagher, Frances McDormand, and some outrageously bad over acting by John Lithgow that's still amusing.

How about "The Killing Fields"? Not a fun movie, but, if I remember right, there was a scene in there where they tried to smuggle an interpreter out of Cambodia with a forged passport; they had built the photo with some improvised methods, and that affected how things unfolded.
"Entering Space" a nonfiction film made by NASA, actually featured, I think, a Hasselbad floating around inside the cabin of the space shuttle; the movie and the book was almost entirely about views of space travel and the view from space.
"We Were Soldiers Once and Young," for the portrayal of a combat photographer on LZ X-Ray (Calloway?).
"Apocalypse Now!" with Dennis Hopper's portrayal of a lunatic reporter at the end of the trail of insanity from Heart of Darkness.
"Full Metal Jacket". The protagonist is a military photographer in the Marine Corps.

The Mechanic-- Charles Bronson uses a Nikon F in the opening sequence.
LA Confidential-- Tabloid reporter with a camera played by Danny DiVito.
North by NorthWest-- Cary Grant is caught on camera "murdering" a UN official.
Sixteen Candles-- Anthony Michael Hall has his friends take a photo of him with the hot girl from school (she's passed out drunk) but the photo ends up with the girl cropped out in camera.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

The girl reporter has only a basic camera with 36 frames. Near the end she is saving her last frame, and uses it for one last picture of her hero.
It goes something like:
he says "there's something I've got to tell you", she clicks the shutter, and he says " the lens cap is still on"

I cannot believe no one mentioed Smoke (1995) with Harvey Keitel (details here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114478/). Great movie with a fantastic script. It makes you think long time after you turn the TV off. Not sure what camera he uses in the movie, possibly a Pentax Spotmatic but I would like to hear other oppinions as well. Cheers
