Photo Streaming Software?

Recommended Posts

Anyone know of software that can be used on Windows 7 which will stream photos to other non-PC devices on my home network (such as a TV). My TV is capable of receiving such streamed photos.
- I use Asset PnP for music streaming and it works well and is easy to use so was hoping for the photo equivalent of that.
- I have tried Windows Media Player to stream photos and it does work BUT requires a huge amount of setup, is very inflexible, and requires you to organise your photos into WMP libraries. It also needs you to set the right security on various folders etc. so is a real pain to set up and use

I've found it easier just to use a network HDMI extension, and let the PC push the signal directly to the TV ... at which point any slideshow tool you've got on the PC will make for a nice show on the TV. If that's logistically a problem, then I can see the appeal of streaming - but I've never felt the need so far.

Chris, I assume it means your TV is compatible with DLNA, and so what you'd need on the Windows system would be a DLNA server. My initial thoughts were Windows media player or media center, but given that your tried those, I'll skip that suggestion.
Note, I haven't used any myself, so I cannot vouch for any of these software titles. I found this site comparing a number of applications: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/6-upnpdlna-servers-streaming-media-devices-crossplatform/. Out of those listed, I know many people swear by XBMC, given it's free it could be a good place to start.

Uhm, looking a bit better I see that support for image files seems to be missing in action for most. But, the setup for Windows 7 does not seem to have to be so complex; here is a FAQ of Panasonic for one of the DLNA Bluray players; step 2 is what you'd need. Adding folders to these Windows libraries is not complicated either: MS Article explaining how-to.
