christian deichert
I get on to photo.net through the home page, and until today I always saw the Photo of the Week and, directly underneath, another photo that was open for critique and that would change every time I reloaded the page. Is this feature gone for good? I always enjoyed it, because often I would discover the work of a user I hadn't yet noticed.
mottershead
Christian, the photo was taken down on purpose, but only temporarily. The critique list from which the photo is chosen at random is computed as the servers come up, and then refreshed every 24 hours. While producing this list is generally quite fast, from time to time something changes internal to the database which causes Oracle to "forget" its efficient query plan and to start using a very slow plan, even though the code is set up to give Oracle hints, etc, on how to do the query quickly. When this happens, we generally have to completely regenerate the statistics that the Oracle query optimizer uses to determine how the queries will be executed. While we are waiting for the opportunity to do this, we turn off the Critique photo so that the servers will come up. This has happened a couple of times before, and the Critique Photo should be back before too long.
