  3. In the Netherlands, Belgium and parts of Germany, the feast of St. Nicholas ("Sinter Klaas") on December 6 is the big day of the year - except birthdays - when children receive presents. From 'Sinter Klaas'. In the US, 'Sinter Klaas' morphed into 'Santa Claus' and was re-imported into Europe as part of the Christmas period. The feast of St Nicholas - with presents and treats for children - is celebrated on a smaller scale in many other European countries and also in parts of the US that have a Dutch or German heritage.

In the lead-up to 6 December 'Sinter Klaas' sometimes visits children and leaves them small treats. They get their main presents just before he departs once more to Spain on December 6. This photo shows how a family is already 'ín the mood'.

  5. The same room- the bigger picture. This is a friend’s backwoods shack that he calls The Hog Shed- situated in the woods at the back edge of his property. Got its name because the 19th century timber frame came from a nearby farm and was an actual hog shack or barn! If you can’t tell from the red solo cup on “Rudolph’s” nose, also a bit of a wise @$$. At least he has a sense of humor. :)
