Pentax 600mm f/4 Hand-On

A great test. My comment is directed to what I believe would

really be the best compromise: The glass available to the Pentax

645 user. The 645 format clearly beats 35mm but the step up

from 645 to 67 is not so marked. The 600mm 5.6 is usable @

5.6 and is tack sharp @ 5.6 w/ no discernable chromatic

aberration (therefore no "slower" than the 600 f4.0). Auto

functions are maintained, and the newest body does have a

mirror lock for slower shutter speeds (alas, will we ever get the

lens as an auto focus?). Whatever the method used in printing, I

would bet @ ANY size a "blinded" viewer would not be able to tell

the medium format images apart, but would easily spot the 35.

BTW, I tested the 800mm f4.0 and at least that sample was

simply unacceptably soft with gross aberration at 4.0-8.0. (The

Mamiya APO's are another story....)

hi, michael,

the comment/test of P600 /f4.0 is fantastic.

but i get question for your advice,

instead of P67, i plan to get a P645 300 f4 ED +/-1.4 converter.

so will it be good combination with Arca swiss B1 /gitzo 1227 for this short tele ( it's short for u:))?

and quality of this lens?

regards

cp

I think that you may find the tripod a bit light for this combination. The only way to tell for sure is to run a test roll. Start at 1/250 sec and work your way down to about 1/8th. Have a look at my Pentax 67 review at http://www.luminous-landscape.com/pentax67ii.htm#another%20example for an example of this.

You might want to consider the Manfrotto #359 support arm. http://www.luminous-landscape.com/359.htm
