beth_hamilton
So at uni we have 1 or 2 of these creamy white plastic reels which look exactly the same as the auto load Paterson ones, but they have extra plastic flat bits at the entrance near the ball-bearings and basically allow you to hold the film flat against them whilst threading into the ball-bearings. Any ideas if these are Paterson and where I can find some from?
tom_aellis1
Very good chance that they are these, they are less expensive then paterson and IMO, much better:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/122989-REG/Samigon_ESA325_Multi_Format_Autofeed_Reel.html
larrydressler
Those are the ones use. They fit the Paterson tanks no problem.
btmuir
I have one and actually like it for 120/220 when I'm not using ss.

I think they might have come with a Paterson clone tank (not the sytem 4 type) that is marked "made in spain"
beth_hamilton
Oh thanks Tom, that's the one! I cannot find them in the UK however.
archaeoImages
You can get them in the UK from Firstcall Photographic - http://firstcall-photographic.co.uk/shop/categories/film-processing-equipment/0/ap/ap-developing-tank-reel/

They're branded AP but I think they are identical to those described above. They are particularly good with 120 film.
tom_aellis1
There are many "Look a likes" of these so be careful. For some reason, these are just fantistic and at such a low price. Strongly suggest that if you can't find them that you have them shipped over the pond. If they help save just one roll of film it will be worth it.
User_502260
I have two of these. They also go under other brand names. I haven't developed film with either of them but I loaded a practice roll into one of them. Several years ago I thought I might get my son interested in picture taking and film developing. He was nearly able to load a regular Paterson reel. I got the new reels thinking they might be easier for him to load. He now uses a Canon digital p&s camera.
larrydressler
So you failed as a Father to him you are saying? or they made him become a Digital failure? ... Just kidding.
I had 1 daughter who I went totally into showing her how to use an enlarger is now all digital and the other one who got intersted now only uses film

Is this you Jeff
http://shaareyyeshua.org/aRabbi/about_rabbi.htm
andylynn
One of my reels came with an inexpensive kit I got from Freestyle a while back, looks like that Samigon/AP one and it's much better for medium format than the Paterson reels.
tom_aellis1
Those Samigon reels are one of the best kept secrets around. No more I guess. :)
I've never had a single problem with one of them, before I purchased my jobo, unless the reel was wet. My bad.
When you develop afterwards, send me your negs for a lil ol' drum scan. I'm about to purchase a Linotype Hell drum scanner. A bit bigger then an SUV and better mileage.
:)
beth_hamilton
Jeff, you wouldn't happen to want to part way with just one of those reels would you? ;)
I've had such trouble loading onto the normal Paterson reels with medium format film, resulting in a huge scratch on the middle of a reasonably important shot.
larrydressler
Freestyle used to sell them alone but I can't find them with Freestyles outdated search system.
tom_aellis1
Why not just buy them at B&H, I think they are $12 or so....

tom_aellis1
Oh, that stinks. Can I help. I.e., purchase them for you and send them in a less expensive manner?
BTW, I have just begun watching, via Netflix streaming, the BBC show "Coupling" it is the funniest TV show I've ever seen in my life.
It's like "Friends" but adult.
Let me know if I can help.
Tom

tom_aellis1
Larry, I'm sorry, I'm not trying to argue, but I don't understand your question. The AP and the Samigon are two different reels. The AP may very well be just as good. I'm just saying they are not the Samigons. Their not under a different brand name etc... the AP's are just AP's, a different brand.
beth_hamilton
Ah sorry Archaeo, I must've missed it before.
Tom - thanks for the offer, I might get the ones that Archaeo posted above.
Ya know, I have not actually seen much of that Coupling show! I've seen lots of Friends though =P
archaeoImages
They look the same & they work the same... so what's the problem?
The ones I have don't have any brand ID on the reel itself but came in an AP box. Probably made on the same production line in China.
larrydressler
No fight here I bet they ar all from the same injection molds just sold by different names.
tom_aellis1
Thats what I'm saying. There is NO problem. But I don't want to say they work as good because I don't know that. Paterson SHOULD work the same to as advertisied but in my mind, they stink.
larrydressler
I hate the small loading gates the Paterson reels have.. But I use them as i have plenty of then but I also have the ones with as I cal them Wing load gates....
