royall_berndt
I ordered four rolls of film from B&H. The tab was a breathtaking fifty bucks. Has the film price increased from normal inflation, or are the manufacturers compensating for lower volume?
glen_h
You don't say which film. E6 films have been over $10 for a while. Most black and white films maybe $5 or $6. C41 films somewhere in between. Super 8, either color or black and white $35. As well as I know, some combination of inflation and sales volume. 1 -- glen
glen_h
Thinking about this a little more, E6 films cost about $10 or so to process a roll. So, compared to that, $10 or so for the film doesn't seem too unreasonable. -- glen
Colin O
Take a look at this price list from B&H from 2004 and marvel at both the selection and prices... https://www.bhphotovideo.com/FrameWork/Product_Resources/monthlyPDF/Photography.pdf
royall_berndt
I ordered one roll each of Velvia, Fuji 400H, Ilford HP 5+, and Ektar. Ordered from B&H.
JDMvW
And, just as a reminder, prices are also higher because of inflation over the years. By some conversions for some years, gasoline at $2.50 a gallon is only $0.25 a gallon in 1960 dollars (cheaper than it normally was at that time). So in terms of mine own very Jugend-zeit, $10 film is only a dollar corrected* for inflation... __________________ *approximate conversion based on US postage rates, don't quibble-- it's not that important)
royall_berndt
I calculate inflation based on the cost of a newspaper or a movie ticket.
royall_berndt
I came across a 1985 copy of Modern Photography. Kodachrome 64 was on offer at $6.49 per roll; processing for it was $5.85. Fujichrome 100 was the same. So film wasn't cheap even "back then." The big advertisers, btw, were 47th Street Photo and Olden.
hjoseph7
Seems like everything related to film is going up these days. Cameras, film & paper . It could be because of the scarcity of these products, but my guess is that film is making a small comeback. The same thing is happening in the Audio industry with Turntables and LP's making a "small" comeback, but a comeback nevertheless...
rodeo_joe1
At this point I could go off at a tangent about reading vinyl LPs with a laser.... but I won't. My inflationometer is the price of beer. It's risen by about 35 to 40 fold since I started drinking it.
arthur_gottschalk
Film cheaper than yachting.

rodeo_joe1
Yachting's cheaper than running a helicopter, a Learjet or a Formula 1 racing team, but what's that got to do with anything?
Dustin McAmera
I wouldn't mail-order four rolls because of the shipping. I can get common films in common sizes from an old-cameras shop near where I work, and I don't mind paying a little above internet prices if it helps that shop stay open.
