alun
For those who may not have seen it, the UK's Observer newspaper on the 21st May carried a 'My Week' column by Geoff Dyer, whose cultural history of photography, THE ONGOING MOMENT, was published recently. Dyer was doing his usual but nonetheless amusing shtick about being a slacker and being awarded prizes for his unclassifiable books. Staring moodily down from his NYC hotel balcony he was photographed by Magnum's Alex Webb. But buried in the piece was this priceless remark by Webb, who said to Dyer: "After the Spanish Civil War, every part of the pig was used. It was eaten. Clothes were made from it. Shoes. The pig was used for everything. Now photography is the pig." Make of it what you will, but it's a splendidly pithy observation. -- Alun
