Oly 24mm shift on a D700?

  1. Hi,
Does anyone have any experience they can share in using the Olympus 24 F3.5 Shift on (full-frame) a D700?
    Thanks

  2. Well, I don't think you can even mount it. If you could, the flange distance might be a problem. So because of that, I think nobody makes the adaptor.

  3. I have seen this lens adapted to fit a Nikon but have not actually used one.

  4. I have seen the adaption done to use that lens on Nikon bodies and even used one -- butthat was back in the 1980s and the adaption was done by Marty Forscher's firm see http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/11/nyregion/11forscher.html
These days, I'd just go ahead and plunk down for the Nikon 24mm PC-E lens. Likely it will be far better optically corrected than a modified 20 + year old design Olympus 24 F3.5 Shift.

  5. I used it on a Canon full frame before (5D). The OM 24mm shift lens is a good lens but not inexpensive. Plus the 24mm tilt and shift Nikkor is not that much more expensive then the Oly. Don't have and never tried the 24mm Nikkor T/S lens but the Oly 24mm shift does not seem to me as good from web samples I seen for the Nikkor. All IMHO.

  6. No, bit I have used the Oly 24mm 3.5 on film (borrowed both the lens and the camera). It wasn't anywhere near equal to the Nikon 24mm f3.5 PC/E on FX digital, and I'd expect it to suffer a bit on film. The Nikon has much better corners when shifted. And it tilts, which is fun for landscapes: you can include some very near foreground.
I'm tempted to echo Ellis's advice, unless you're really in a financial bind, spring for the Nikon.

Maybe not, but so many of them have been adapted to Nikon mount that it's easier to find one in Nikon mount than Oly mount. ;) Heck, there's one on KEH right now, under Nikon Manual Focus.

  7. Steve, I have used an Olympus 24mm F3.5 shift lens, modified by SK Grimes, on a Nikon FM2N.
You need to be aware of the camera prism overhang, which may interfere with the lens movements. It just clears on the FM2N. I don't know about the D700.

  8. Thanks all, I'm looking at a Nikon adapted unit, but know I should spring for new. Problem is I understand the 24 PC hits against the prism on the D700 (you can turn it upside down...), so enter the D3 into my NAS. If only I could hack the Canon 17mm on the D700 ;)

  9. I have been using a Nikon 24mm 3.5 PC lens on a D200 and a D700 the latter is a new addition. The lens works ok on the D200 and is perfect on the D700. The image quality with the D700 is terrific.
I have used Olympus cameras and lens' in the past and they are fine instruments. However, they cannot touch the D700 and 24mm PC for quality images.
