north facing windows

Recommended Posts

The idea behind having north facing windows is that the light will be soft, indirect and fairly even all day long. The sun, even in summer will not shine directly in the window. In the Southern Hemisphere, the opposite is true, south facing windows provide the same effect.

Here in California we would say, north window, sweet, dude. Perhaps since it could take months to paint a portrait, having consistent light all day from the north window was an advantage. Photographers need it what, 1/125 of a second? You can get indirect light from a window when the sun is not on that side of the building, east vs west. On south window sun is coming directly through the window much of the day. Harder shadow transitions. A white bed sheet taped over the window can help with that. Or a large scrim. But if I was running a studio and wanted the option to use that window light all day, I guess north facing would be nice to have that potential.
