wingedrabbit
Well, I bought a Canon 24mm prime lense(non-L) and had it for only a few months. This morning while trying to take some sunrise shots, I noticed I wasn't able to manually focus. By this, I mean I can click the switch from AF to MF. The screen on my Elan7e shows the lense is in manual focus (by showing "MF" icon), but the focusing ring isn't moving the elements. There is no difference in the focusing ring resistance between switching from AF to MF, I've searched the archives and haven't found other instances of this problem. Do I have a lemon? Ok, right before I submitted this question, I checked the manual focus. I switched it into manual mode, turned the focusing ring and halfway through a full turn, the focusing ring clicked and engaged the manual focus. Maybe the temperature had an effect(affect?) on it. Has anyone else had this same problem? I'll still submit this question for history sake incase others have this same problem.
josh1
Never had that happen...but the manual focus on the 24/2.8 does have a pretty crappy feel to it. Its not really damped and there really isn't much resistance at all to turning it. Are you for sure it wasn't focussing?
halfway through the full turn, the focusing ring clicked and engaged the manual focus. sounds like maybe you do have a lemon. panos_voudouris
It happened with my 135/2.8 and 28/2.8 once on each. I panicked a bit but after switching the AF/M switch back and forth slowly and with a bit more pressure everything switched to place. I cannot remember the conditions but I think I was out in the cold too. So maybe just the switch not making proper contact with something. The 50/1.8 II was quite prone to it but given the feel of the switch it was no surprise. I think you'll be fine.
