Happy Wednesday, Nikon-land. At a recent emergency response training event, I had a chance to walk and talk and shoot with a unit of combat photographers soon to be attached to one of the 101st's deployed brigades, off in Iraq. They'd spent their training time using warhorse Nikon D2X bodies, but were - on the day we talked - test driving several different new bodies as they began to integrate video into their work. On this day, it was (steady, now) Canon 5DMKII's. Mixed reviews, from the two ladies in the unit, who are dyed-in-the-wool Nikonistas. Had your Nikon gear out with some unusual fellow photographers? Share a photo!

00Xeax-300343584.jpg.6a7f9fdab35c3a5c88568f0ce08d8d9b.jpg

Nikon Buddies,
Posting early, this week, though not alone. I'll have to revisit to see what wonders are shared by everyone.
I'm posting my favorite portrait from the weekend. Neither of these girls has a camera in this picture, because on this day, they were borrowing mine!

00Xeb7-300349584.jpg.b021c444527debca96148a59b513f651.jpg

Here is how we are looking after our unthreatened population of magpies in Australia. While the preservation of a thriving population may seem odd you only need to meet Eddie McGuire (the AFL President of the Collingwood Football Club) in order to appreciate the magnitude of the concern.

Fall arrives a bit later here in California. We had a rainstorm over the weekend, and all of a sudden there are a lot of leaves on the ground, indicating that fall has indeed arrived.

Hi Matt,

Here is my shot for the week.

This was taken in the studio (ok, garage). I started with a bottle of sake and two sake cups. I put them on a granite slab. I used studio strobes on both sides. Left side was 45'. 45'. Right side was -1 stop 90' 0'. Both had umbrellas. I experimented with various backlights on a brushed stainless steel background. After I realized I couldn't adequately control my background, I went with black velvet which blended into the granite very smoothly.

After bracketing, I exposed 1/2 stop darker than my Sekonic flash meter recommended. I had to do several takes to see what the light really looked like, adjusted composition, and made adjustments to the lighting and covered some reflections with more black velvet.

I started off using my 1993 105 micro. I tried substituting my 70-200 f2.8 VR2, but I did not find it to be more sharp and found the heavy lens to be inconvenient in the studio. Its weight, even using the tripod collar, made working with the tripod beyond inconvenient, so I went back to the 1993 105 f.28 micro.

The total exercise took about 3 hours, which is pretty quick for a studio shoot.

Hello Everybody,
I wanted to do a photo for the same photo group as Grant, the theme was "Vivid", so I opted for colourful Lego blocks and planned to submerge them in bubbly water and photograph them. In the end the best shot was one, when my son is actually pouring the water into the glass, so I used this one.
Taken with D700, 24-70 f/2.8@ISO 400, f/4, 1/60s
Have a lovely week and I can't wait to see the rest of your photos.
PS.: I hope you've all noticed our very own Tiffany's photo of the week on the front page of photo.net! Superb! Congratulations, Tiffany!

00XebO-300361584.jpg.1a6432fb6618e94261dd33e3feb27cb5.jpg

My first post for a Wednesday thread! I won't be around tomorrow so hopefully joining in with those posting what is a day early to me is ok. ;) Very hard to chose but this shot seems to get a good reaction from my friends and family. As well it has my two favorite subjects. Photography and Coral, great ice breakers all around!

Really nice group of photos so far! I was actually planning to take a photo of the Bird of Paradise for the "Vivid Color" assignment Grant and Jana spoke of, when I spotted a mantis. I coaxed it onto the flower and changed my focus to it. I'm glad it came along to add to the fun. For once, I was shooting with a tripod so I could capture the colors in early morning natural light. D90/Sigma 150mm@1/45, f/8, ISO 400.

Hello Everyone...
We had plenty of fireworks over the weekend on account of Guy Fawkes Night. It was quite ironic that I happened to be in the Parliment on Friday night for an event, the same building he tried blowing up back in the early 1600s. Anyway, I took this photo at Victoria Park.

00XecJ-300381684.jpg.ca2e20247897987547e7120811d6e4ee.jpg
