Nikon TC 14b / TC 14E II on a 500 f4p

I understand from previous posts that the TC 14b 1.4 is the best

choice for a 500mm f4p lens because the chip in the lens permits

matrix metering. So if I were using a N 90s Nikon body and placed a

newer TC 14E II 1.4(AF)on the 500mm f4p lens, would I be gaining or

losing any metering capabilities compared to the TC 14b.

Nikon and official sites will tell you that the tc14E and 500f4P are not compatible.

However, the TC14E can interface with the 500 by filing off a little tab to make it work (with many non AF-I and AF-S Lenses for that matter) and I HOPE that the same is true of the II, though I haven't seen one of the IIs in person. I filed off the tab on the original 14E and 20E and get great results with the 500f4p. (Most the photos in my bird folder were taken with 500f4P+ tc14e, one was taken by stacking both for a 1400f11!)

You gain matrix metering with any P type lens, although there aren't many 'p' lenses other than the 500.

You get in-viewfinder Fstop, but it's off by one; It doesn't require any compensation, the lens reads f4 wide open instead of f5.6.

And you get a TC that is usable with any telephoto af-s lenses you have or buy.

You lose your warranty though.

On the Nikon sites they imply that the II series teleconverters are only compatible with the AF-S II series of lenses...I was unable to tell if that was just marketing though.

Happy shooting!
