Nikon Software Suite

<p>This is going to sound very strange. </p>

<p>I am trying to install the Nikon Software Suite that came with my D300 and whenever I do, my PC also gets some wierd antivirus software installed that I never heard of...Extar Antivirus or something like that.</p>

<p>It is causing major problems; numerous virus alert pop-up windows, shortcuts to porn sites, you name it. I've restored my PC to an earlier date and no problem. I try to reinstall the software and the same thing keeps happening.</p>

<p>Has anyone else experienced this?</p>

<p>Was this a used D300? New from a trustworthy site? eBay?</p>

<p>Consider the junk is already on your computer and the installation of new software activates it.</p>

<p>What comes in the box is free download from Nikon USA. Try getting it from there.</p>

<p>Unless you have a specific reason to need Nikon software stay away from it. Nikon is a good camera (+optics + ... ) producer. Once Nikon lives up to produce good software you can give it another try. :-)<br /> I use NX2 occasionally because it gives better noise reduction for my D3 images at high ISO than my mostly used Adobe "Camera Raw" converter. Images from older Nikon cameras did not need this special treatment (D70, D200).NX2 got a terrible user interface and many other problems. In all cases where I can avoid it I use software from other sources.<br>

Another Nikon software I use is "Camera Control Pro) . Moderately OK but even in this simple ssoftware there are problems and the software is not up to international standards. I need it so I use it.<br>

What exactly do you need? Perhaps there is an alternative? Many use proprietary software just to transfer images from camera to computer. Current operating systems can do that without additional software. Just in case that was something you were looking for.<br>

This is my personal opinion and many will disagree and oppose. There is no need to repeat all the arguments of older threads here - you could just search for this in PN.</p>

<p>I can't agree with Walter. Although the Nikon Capture interface can still us some work NO OTHER software will get as much out of a raw image nondestructively as Capture NX or NX 2. That's an absolute fact. I still use Photoshop elements for doing some final sizing and printing but NX is well worth the $100 or so that it costs. If you are serious about getting the most out of your Nikon Raw images, Capture NX is a must.</p>

<p>I think I figured out where the problem lies. I've reinstalled ViewNX and Capture NX and all is fine. The problem is when I try and install Nikon Transfer, even from the Nikon website, I get an error message stating that it is not from a trusted source and certain files are corrupt. </p>

<p>Anyone know of a good transfer software for NEF images?</p>

Photo Mechanic. I tried and discarded everything else, including Nikon's own software. Photo Mechanic can sort and rename based on EXIF data and apply IPTC templates and keywords to the NEF itself so it isn't lost in Capture NX. Breeze Downloader Pro comes close if you don't need the keywording capability.</p>
