Nikon NX 1.3 still shuts me out

Hi all

I am still having problems with Nikon NX, I have recently upgraded to

version 1.3 in anticipation of my new D3, hopefully arriving early January.

Today I attempted to work on 30 NEF images taken with my D200, and after

maybe three images I received the Windows XP message that the programme had

encountered a problem and needed to close down, this occurred on four more

occasions before I finally managed to complete my work.

This seems to be an ongoing problem that has plagued me since my move

from Nikon Capture version 4, which might I add, I never had any problems with

at all.

I am sure that everyone must have found Nikon NX version 1.00 the most

painfully slow batch converter ever produced, I certainly did, and wrote to

Nikon to air my grievance with them, however version 1.2 made a difference in

that respect though I still had the above glitches, now I find that in version

1.3 things are just as bad, and before anyone says try Adobe Lightroom or

Photoshop, that is defeatism, and I believe that Nikon need to get their act

together and come up with a reliable piece of software that allows us to work

with our NEF files without glitches.

I am running Windows XP with an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (2x 40Ghz)1066Mgz

processor, with 4096 MB DD2 667Mhz RAM (4 x 1GB.

My software is contained on the built in 250GB "C" Drive and my images

are worked on from a file on a seperate built in 250 GB "D" Drive, I only

transfer my images to external drives once all the work on them is completed,

so basically they are purely storage devices. Incidentally my "C" and "D"

drive are not configured in a RAID setup.

I would welcome any comments from anyone on the forum who may have, or

indeed is experiencing a similar problem, and any suggestions as to a solution

would be very much appreciated, I am of course conscious that I will receive

another copy of Nikon NX version 1.3 bundled with my D3 and I intend to

uninstall my older version together with the updated plug ins, and then

download Nikon's supplied version to see if that makes any difference, however

having paid top dollar for the original version, I still think that Nikon

needs to be asking some searching questions about their software, my

experiences so far are that it certainly does not live up to the reputation of

their camera's and lenses, I look forward to your comments, and may I take the

opportunity to wish all the forum members a "Happy Christmas" and the very

best for the forthcoming "New Year", regards

You might have some luck trying it in 'compatibility mode'. I found it necessary with Version, but haven't needed it in later versions. Find the 'capturenx.exe' file in the program folder, right click on it, choose 'properties', compatibility, check 'run this program etc.', and try windows 98. If it doesn't work out just change it back, no harm done. This workaround was provided by Nikon, but for version 1, not 1.3.

Make sure you have service pack updates for both your O/S and Office (if you are running office). I had the same XP message repeatedly over a number of applications and it didn't resolve until I got a notice from Microsoft that the notices were due to something Microsoft was doing and to install the new service pack for Office and it would correct. And it did. This was less than two months ago.

Do you have a fixed Windows Swap file size? I used to allocate 2.5x my installed RAM size as my Windows Swap file size, as many web sites had proclaimed that this was faster than letting Windows manage the swap file. However, Capture NX would conk out after batch processing about 3-4 images, as you're experiencing.
Make sure that you have windows managing the swap file size. In Windows XP this is adjusted through right-clicking My Computer/Properties/Advanced Tab/Performance settings box/Advanced/Virtual memory - change box/System managed size.
Once I did that, the batch processing problems disappeared. When processing batch files, the Windows swap file can grow to enormous size. I routinely batch process >100 scans (i.e. 3 - 4 rolls of film) from my Coolscan 5000 (each almost 120MB) without a hitch. I do let it run overnight when doing such a big batch though.

Hi everybody, thanks for your comments and suggestions, I have tried Don's suggestion, with no obvious difference, I have also checked my updates with Microsoft and I am fully up to speed with all the necessary patches etc, both for XP and Office 2003 (I do not like the feedback for the 2007 version). I intend to take Arthur's suggestion, but I am awaiting my D3 which should arrive in the next two weeks, and so I will un install the buggy version I have and try the new version supplied with the camera. In reply to Roberts question, the answer is yes 2458 is the fixed size, and if my experiment with the new version is not a success I intend to try the swap file method of moving forward. Anthony and Douglas reassure me that I am not becoming paranoid about the bugs, however I am going to telephone Nikon UK professional support next week when they finally all get back to work, and see what they have to say, however last time I spoke to them about the speed of batch processing in version 1.0 they seemed very un interested, which given the loyalty of all the purchasers of their equipment is a poor response, still as Douglas says, no doubt version 1.3.1 is just around the corner, or possibly Nik Software will launch a completely new programme for us having had the consumers bench test BETA Versions 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0!! Thank you all again for taking the trouble to offer suggestions, regards
