adam_faraday
can anybody offer any advice or links relating to problems with a nikon fe meter coupling / resistor ring. it won't return all the way to the lowest [largest] aparture setting without nudge. i am using a nikkor 50mm 1.4 ai lense and the resistor ring matches up with the lense aperture all the way from f16 down to f2.. then sits on f2 when i put the aperture to 1.4. i am assuming this is due to a weak spring in the body somewhere and am tempted to open it up via the small screw on the underside directly under the lense mount, but am wary of doing this and ruining the camera. i have sought advice from repair shops and have recieved quotes for more than the cost of the camera just to get it looked at! any advice, help or comments would be greatly appreciated. thanks, adam
david_h._hartman
It needs cleaning. Any good local camera repair can do this. Ive never had this happen on any of my cameras but Im told its a fairly common problem.

DHH
curt wiler
Likewise. I have had it happen with this model when fine sand got under the ring. As I recall, I just exercised it and it started to work OK. Been working for about 20 years now, although I seldom use this body now days just because I like a little more automation, particularly in the flash metering. david_h._hartman
BTW that ring is not a resistor ring. Here is a diagram of what its really doing. FRE is sort for Functional Resistance Element. Please see diagram below...
