patrick_van_osta
Has anyone had any experience with the Nikon D100 in combination with maunbal focus AI Nikkors and the TC-16a converter?I have a bunch of AI Nikkors and a TC-16A which I use on my trusty old F2AS. I just bought a D100 body (not yet delivered). I'm pretty sure I can use the lenses in manual mode on the D100. But I read that the tc-16A can do limited autofocus with certain lenses on certain camreas.Hence the question: has anyone tried this and what were the results? sorin
The D100 (like the N80 & N65) doesn't meter with lenses without chips. You can use it in full manual but you have to use a handheld meter.
patrick_van_osta
Thank you for your reply. Does that mean that, if I use for instance my manual Nikkor AI 50mm F/1.4, without the TC-16A, I will also not get any metering?
Jerry_
The Nikon manual-focus lenses with a 'P' designation are the ones (i.e., the recently released Nikkor 45mm f2.8 P lens) that can be used with the D100 body. Your Ai 50mm lens may be OK to use, but it would be best for you to check the instruction booklet when you get your D100 body.(Best results will be obtained by using a AF Nikkor lens on the D100.) vedearduff
Patrick, You will not damage your D100 with AI and AIS lenses, but you will have to go to full manual mode if you use them. The D100 will not meter with them, you will need to meter the scene with a hand held meter and then set your shutter and aperture manually. There are some manual focus lenses with a P designation that will meter with the D100. One example has already been mentioned, the 45mm AI-P. Most AI/AIS lenses can be chipped. This means that a CPU can be added. One example of a lens that cannot be chipped is the 50mm f/1.2, another is the 105mm f/2.5. These lenses do not have a corresponding version in the AF line. The CPU that is added to a given AI/AIS lens comes from the corresponding AF version, the aperture range needs to match. I believe this service costs around $80.00 US for each lens. I hope this helps. Vernon
patrick_van_osta
Thank you Vernon, That was most helpful. I have a 50mm f/1.4, a 105 f/2.5,a 135 f/2.8, and a 180 f/2.8 ED. I guess it's worth chipping the 50 and the 180... Thanks again, Patrick
gordon_ho
Patrick, for your information, here is the website of the party most people were referring to when it comes to "chipping" AI and AI-s lenses. http://home.carolina.rr.com/headshots/Nikonhome.htm Note that not every lens is convertible, even some with very "normal" apertures. For instance, I'd love to have my 35 f/1.4 converted since there is no AF-equivalent, but alas, no luck!!
