luis_marco_de_sebastian
I recently bought a f100 (previously had a 8008s) and noticed when mounting this lens (AF 50mm 1.4D), that had given me no problems before, that the AF function did not always work...everything else did but most the times it did not. I had to take it out and put it again several times till it began working (cleaned the contacts but did not seem to help). By the way i face no problems with my other 4 nikkors regarding AF or anything else. Today the AF finally stopped working at all with this lens. Now all focus settings (C, S and M) work just like M only. The feel while manual focusing is the same in all three positions, all like if i had set M, smooth manual focusing instead of the usual resistence you face when AF (C or S)is being used.Any ideas? Have i forced the AF in the lens? Is it reparaible and/or expensive? I also have noticed that my F100 (1 month old) sucks batteries like a champ...about a roll per fresh (good) AA alkaline batteries, even if i used a lot of AF this is not normal so i am taking it for service as i know this is a usual problem with F100.. the question is: is there any relationship between th AF quit working just in this lens and the batteries consumption? I guess there is no way this can happen but just wanted to discard it completely. Thanks.
ellis_vener_photography
It sounds like your camera has a short in it. None of this is normal behaviour.
jersey_emt
I actually experienced the same exact problem (AF did not always work) with the F100 and the 50mm f/1.4D. To fix it, I just removed the lens and remounted it, and AF would work. It never stopped working completely though like yours has. I never noticed any battery consumption problems, so I'm guessing the two are related in some way. Take the body and lens to a Nikon repair shop and have them take a look. david_h._hartman
It could be that for some reason the 50/1.4D is not turning quite far enough for the AF mechanisms to engage. Ive had the problem once or twice but it was because the lens was not fully secured. I think it was with a 50/1.8D (Chinese). The lens was stiffer than most going on the camera. I bought it as a donation for a local high school. I imaging its broken-in and working fine. I have an older 50/1.8 non-D (Japan) and its kind of loose. I wish quality control on these lenses was better. Sorry your having this problem. Regards,
