john_brewton
I've heard good things about both. The new Dell is supposed to be better than anything in its price range, but I heard a few disparaging words about quality control. The Apple Cinema is also supposed to be great (except price). To those using the new Dell how about some feedback or personal experience. Anyone using the Apple with a PC? Any difficulties running it with a PC? I have a Dell Dimension E510 with 2 GB RAM & 250 hard drive. Of course there are others to consider as well, but I've always been concerned about compatibility. Also most of the information in the search feature seems to be very dated. Thanks in advance for all assistance.
wilvoeka
Check out the Gateway 21". They sell them at best buy and Office Depot. ITs HD has multiple inputs, built in USB 2.0 hub and many other features. Many of the Tech mags rate at 10. Price is 599.00 US$.
james_bass1
Look at the Samsung monitors. I use two of them, a SyncMaster 191T and 910T. Basically the same monitor but a year apart. They have 1000:1 contrast ratios and look pretty good. A graphic artist friend bought two and has no problem color matching for print work. The model numbers change all the time, so check spec's. will king
I just got the Dell 24 Wide LCD, and love it ....after calibrating it. For $705 US dollars, I thought it was a bargain.
godfrey
I have an Apple Cinema Display 23" and my boyfriend just bought a Samsung 205bw 20" display. I'd have to say that the ACD is superior in build quality, but for 1/4 the price that Samsung does extremely well. I calibrated both with a Gretag-Macbeth Eye One Display 2 to meet the same specs, driven by the same computer/graphics card (Apple PowerMac G5 with nVidia GEForce 6600 card), and the differences in imaging quality are vanishingly small. john_brewton
Thanks for the response, Godfrey. Exactly the type of info I was looking for. On a different note (just to Godfrey) my friend Luigi just imported two Twin Spark engines and had one installed in his '79 Spider. He also has a GTV-6 w/3 litre and a 164. Another neighbor just bought a Ford GT (the GT-40 replica made by Ford). I got a demo ride last week. Typical American torque monster, pretty darn quick but no soul. digitmstr
Just so you know: AKAIK, there is ONLY one manufacturer of wide screen lcd panels (such as the one used in Apple and Dell LCDs), which is Phillips. I believe the panel used in both the Apple and Dell is the LG.Philips LCD LM201W01 panel. That being said, most LCDs monitors (or their parts) are made by a few manufacturers and assembled/branded as needed.

I know Phillips subcontracts to LG for some of them, and that Samsung and Toshiba also have fabs capable of doing the job.

Also, the panel is not the only component to be aware of. The quality of the supporting hardware and firmware, power supply, etc, all have their influence on the final product.

John Brewton:
> On a different note (just to Godfrey) my friend Luigi just
> imported two Twin Spark engines and had one installed in his '79
> Spider. Pretty darn fancy stuff there.

Interesting about fitting the TS into a Spider. I thought I heard that there were issues with engine package height, but obviously nothing is insurmountable... ;-)

Godfrey
bobmichaels
I have a Dell 20" widescreen. Nice monitor, does fine once callibrated. But it's just a monitor which is an insignificant step in the process to making great photos.
larry_kincaid1
When I looked into this a few months ago, it seemed that there were actually only two types of original designs: the Phillips design used by Dell, Apple, NEC, and others, and the other by Samsung. My understanding was that the Phillips design had qualities better suited for photography and graphics.
leicaglow
I use a smaller Dell wide screen and my main screen is a 21" Viewsonic. The Viewsonic works better for me because of the options and adjustments, but I've heard complaints about its less than stellar speakers (which I've not even used). It was quite inexpensive at Costco. I've seen the Apple Cinema at a colleague's studio who does a lot of video work. It is beautiful, big, and cost him more than my entire HP PC setup. Other than workspace size, it didn't knock my socks off any more than my Viewsonic.
