david_ford3 Posted April 25, 2010 Share Posted April 25, 2010
I have a Nikon D50. Just bought a Tamron 17-50mm lens used. And I am a novice. Shoot in aperture mode mostly, and sometimes auto mode.
This picture just is not sharp. It should be with this lens. Does the camera need a cleaning, or is it me. Getting so frustrated. Thought this lens might pick up my enthusiasm again.
http://i40.tinypic.com/2m4akj9.jpg

Here is a smaller shot that the previous owner took with the same lens and also a D50.

http://i40.tinypic.com/14voa4x.jpg
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

jannekaakinen Posted April 25, 2010 Share Posted April 25, 2010
ISO seems to be 1600 in the first pic, that might have something to do with your problem. Try the shooting with ISO 200 and see if that improves the sharpness.
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Kent Shafer Posted April 25, 2010 Share Posted April 25, 2010
Agreed on the ISO. Also, in the first picture the sharpest part seems to be the grass in the lower left corner. How did you focus?
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
hans_janssen Posted April 25, 2010 Share Posted April 25, 2010
on pic 1 the noise is the problem:1/2000 f7.1 iso 1600 40mm. The max shuttertime can be 1/60the(1.5 x 1/f), so the iso can be set to 200 and the shutterspeed will still less. Check if your auto iso is on, if on set it on of.
pic 2: no exif and too small.
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
david_ford3 Posted April 25, 2010 Author Share Posted April 25, 2010
http://i40.tinypic.com/2m4akj9.jpg

http://i40.tinypic.com/2m4akj9.jpg

Here are better links I hope. Can't really compare the two pictures, I guess. Totally different settings. Like I mentioned earlier, I am so frustrated that I can't get sharp pictures. The camera and lens are capable of it. It is me knowing how to use the right settings I guess. Thought that maybe the camera needed a cleaning.

ISO auto was probably on. Not sure, as I reset all settings back to default last night and try to start all over again.
Not sure I know what you mean "how did you focus." Camera was on aperture priority. I am a novice, please be kind. I let the camera focus itself.

[image]
Make = NIKON CORPORATION
Model = NIKON D50
Orientation = top/left
Software = Ver.1.00
Date Time = 2010-04-24 14:13:30
<br Kent Shafer Posted April 25, 2010 Share Posted April 25, 2010
David, you have to focus the lens on the thing in the picture that you want to be in sharpest focus. Aim so that the focus point in the viewfinder (a small rectangle) is on that thing, then press the shutter release halfway to focus. If you want, you can then hold the shutter release halfway down while you move the camera to compose the picture the way you want it, then press it the rest of the way to take the picture.

The camera and lens both have to be set to autofocus. In the data you posted, it says: "Focus Mode: Manual," and it also says "AFPoints [autofocus points] In Focus: None," so maybe that's the problem. Check the little switch on the front of the camera near where the lens mounts. It's marked "A" (for auto) and "M" (for manual). Make sure it's on "A." There is also a switch on the lens—it has to be set to "A" or "AM," not "M."

Good luck.
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
