Neat image vs. Noise Ninja

Recommended Posts

If I had to generalize, Neat Image seems to be the more powerful of the two programs, particularly in regard to luminance noise. It requires a bit of tweaking to avoid losing fine detail, and early versions of NI (1.0-3.0) occasionally had problems with artifacting.

Noise Ninja appears to remove less noise, but can be more aesthetically pleasing with high-ISO shots because it more easily preserves the look of film grain. For the same reason, fine detail tends to be slightly better than NI.

Neat Image has uses that extend far beyond grain removal. It's saved a great deal of work on the occasions I've had to restore photographs with certain types of fine physical damage.
