    My wife knows a lot more about birds than I do, and she thinks it is a red tail due to the large size, but I have some difficulty telling those apart. That hawk soon took off as we got closer and I took this picture.

  9. Dark patagials (underwing bars at the front of the wing) and the belly band indeed make this a red-tailed.
