Minolta film lenses fit on digital SLR's?

Recommended Posts

Minolta AF lenses do fit Minolta DLSR's.

MF lenses can fit with a special adapter but I think TTL metering will not work at all and autoaperture is also off (which means you have to fully open the lens to focus and then close it down to the aperture you want to shoot at). Might or moght not be worth the trouble (depends on how badly you need to use a given lens and what exactly are you shooting).

One more thing: as of now, Minolta has has APS-C sensors in their DSLRs so the nominal focal length of the lenses needs to be multiplied by 1.5 to get the effective focal length. In other words, your 24mm wide angle lens that you love so much is suddenly 36mm tourist lens but your always a little short 300mm telephoto is not whooping 450mm.

And yet one more thing: if you still keep film bodies around, be careful when buying new lenses. Some of them have image circle only big enough to cover the APS-C sensor so you cannot use them on the film body (these are usually marked at "optimized for digital" or something in those lines). Always ask when in doubt.

Minolta has two type of film camera mounts. The older MC/MD manual focus mount and the newer AF mount. The AF mount lens will work on the Minolta 5D and 7D DSLR. The MC/MD mount lens will need an adapter to work with the 5D & 7D. These adapters are discontinued and can be found in ebay for arround $100.

There are no adapters that can fit a Minolta lens to another DSLR like Canon or Nikon. There is a rare MD/MC to M42 macro adapter. You will have very limited close focus range when using this adapter.
