philip_dowling
I am wanting to buy a second hand medium format B & W enlarger. I see that there are any number of these available on e-bay. Most are in the U.S. Even with shipping costs I can still save money but the problem is that in the US the voltage is 120v, whereas here in Australia the voltage is 240v. If I buy an enlarger from the U.S. what needs to be done to it so I can use it here. Is it simply a matter of changing the globe, or is there more to it?? I know I could use a transformer but I'd rather avoid that if I could. Thanks in anticipation.
art_haykin
It's my understanding that there are relatively inexpensivelittle step-down transformers for a single appliance as wellas some with multiple outlets. What is your objection to thisremedy?
jerry_lehrer
Art His objection would be that he would need a step-DOWN transformer to use a lower voltage bulb. His best bet would be to change the bulb socket and wall plug to use the European standard. Why change a globe, whatever that refers to? Or does he mean a spherical reflector? art_haykin
Gerald, when I said a step-down transformer, I was assuminghe'd stick with American bulbs, or "globes," as the were called in my log cabin days.
Aoresteen
Buy a Beseler 23C. I used my 23C with an Aristo coldlight head for years in Germany with a 220-110 stepdown transformer. Also, Beseler makes 220v versions and I would bet that you could buy a 220 v lamp setup from them.
james_hine
Philip, Check out the "Trading Post" paper in your local area. I managed to pick up a besler 45MV(or MX) enlarger with a Schnieder 135 APO lens, 35mm, 6x6 and 4x5 holders for AUD$300 with not much effort. In 2 weeks of searching there where entire darkroom setups for between $700 to $1600. Take a look at: Http://www.tradingpost.com.au or in Melbourne http://www.melbournetradingpost.com.au Regards,
