Marty Castilla FD to EF Mount Converters

Discussion in 'Canon FD' started by chris rasmussen, Nov 26, 2020.

  1. Greetings all!

I've tried without success to contact Marty regarding his conversion mounts and wondered if any here have them in use, (and whether or not you can still reach Mr. Castilla.)

    Thank you, and happy snapping!

  2. Try a Google™ search. I don't know anything about Mr. Castilla, but there are/were lots of FD>EOS adapters available on eBay and from other sources.

You are aware that for everything except macro, a glass element is required. This might be the argument for more-expensive conversters, but by most accounts, none of them works very well.

  3. Thanks JDMvW,

I'd tried both his websites, the number posted on one (not set up for messages) and reaching out to his LinkdIn account. The reason I specifically want Marty's mount is, unlike the adapter mounts which add space and thus require additional light and resolution-robbing elements, his corrects the flange focal distance and doesn't add glass.

The adapters adding a 1.4x tele-converting (and correction for distance) element are indeed altogether less impressive on the 1200mm lens for which I'm seeking the mount; they produce a small, round image circle in the image area - tolerable for shots of the moon, but not much else.

Thanks again for your thoughts, and happy shooting!

    Chris ~

  4. Thanks for clarifying. Good luck with your quest.

  5. I'm not familiar with Marty Castilla. I bought a Ed Mika FD-to-EF converter back when he was making them. Same idea, a converter with no glass involved that focuses to infinity. I use it on a FD 28/2.0 I have. There is a company out there who sells and does these lens mount conversions. Try Googling Ed Mika and see where that takes you.

  6. Hi Chris

I received and replied to all your emails. I have had a few people email me and when I reply the email I get a return email that the email account can't accept email or the account is offline.

  7. The Ed Mika is not a converter. It is a mount conversion. I have a Canon FD 55mm f1.2 SSC Aspherical that was previously converted to Edmika EF mount. It works superbly! After about a 2 year shutdown he is indicating on facebook that he is getting back into production. To some extent he has cooperated with Simmod, but his mount conversion covers more lenses and is cheaper.

The Canon FD to EOS 1.26x converter works extremely well. I had one 15 years ago for my FD 400/2.8 L and now I have one again for my FD 800/5.6 L. It would work brilliantly on the 1200 FL.

I also have the Kenko FD to EOS 2x converter and it too is extremely good. An EF 2x is a bit sharper but of course does not take FD lenses.

I have had my eye on the last Canon FD 1.4x-A with EF mount conversion on eBay, for the last 18 months, so I should not tell you, but that would be another possibility for long lenses.

I am not familiar with Marty either. Will have to check him out. There are still a couple of FD L lenses I would purchase if I knew I could get them converted.

  8. Sad to report that Ed Mika has passed away in the last week. He was a dedicated Canon user and obviously a technical wizard.
