Hi, I am a new member of Photo.net. I have a special camera project

that plans to use Mamiya TLR 55mm and 80mm lenses. I am only

interested in infinity focusing. I like to know if both lens mounts

are the same distance from the film surface at infinity? If not,

what is the difenence in mm? And the diameter of the rear element on

both lenses? I hope the Mamiya TLR users can help me out before I

make the purchase. Thanks

_Very approximately_, the film to flange distance for the 55mm at infinity is 8mm longer than the 80mm at infinity. This is an eyeball estimate. If I was convinced that there was a high demand for this detail, I'd measure it properly and add it to the web pages 8-).

The external diameter of the rear elements is the same. I assume you don't want the optical diameter. However the depth of the rear elements from the mounting flange is different - the 55mm is deeper.

At a guess, you are building a camera of some sort, and plan to split the shuttered lens from the viewing lens.

No, they are not. By my semiacurrate wooden ruler and failing eye, the belows draw is about 1-2mm when the 80mm is focused at the infinity and the 55mm needs about 7-8mm of belows draw to focus on the infinity. Generally, each lens in the Mamiya TLR lineup has different infinity position). Mamiya TLR lenses are a ZOO of different lens designs, each with unique personality.

There might be some data regarding this in Mamiya TLR user manual (available for free from http://www.mamiya.com, Support section). Or try their user forums at http://www.macuserforums.com . Or hit the Mamiya technical department directly, they seem to be willing to answer all sorts of questions from Mamiya enthusiasts (contact number somewhere on their website).

If you need a camera with fixed infinity position for different lenses, consider RB67 (somebody correct me if I am wrong about this, but I doubt).

Thanks for all of your valuable information. I am trying to build two 6x6 format 3-D cameras with a Sputnik camera body. Someone already build one with the 80mm lenses, but he had to cut the front plate of the Sputnik to paper thin in order to make the infinity fousing. I am grad to know that the 55mm required about 8mm more distance from the film (not less as with a view camera.) Now I can start to collect all the nesessary parts; 2 Sputnik bodies, 2 each of Mamiya TLR 80mm and 55mm lenses, but finding two matched pairs may not be easy.
