Mamiya Press G / Universal lens interchangeability

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty sure that all the Mamiya lenses were interchangeable between the various Press models. It was the backs that caused confusion. The earliest models only worked with Mamiya backs, the G accepted Graflok backs, and the Universal could be adapted for either. When Mamiya introduced the RB67 SLR it used Graflok backs and Mamiya started to make their own version of them, so it made sense to be able to use them on the press cameras also.

Just to follow up for anyone getting here by a search...

I can now report that a 90mm lens that came with a Mamiya Press G

works fine on a Mamiya Universal. A 75mm lens meant for the Mamiya

Universal does not mount on the Mamiya Press G, due to a little screw

in the lens mount. If you remove this screw, however, you can mount

the lens on the Mamiya Press G. You have to be careful, however.

The Mamiya Press G has a little device that detects when a collapsable

lens is collapsed, which can touch the 75mm lens as you mount it. I

took off the back so that I could manually move this device

back, and make sure nothing bad happened as I mounted the lens.

The whole operation is possible only because the rear of the 75mm

lens is not circular (as for every other lens I've ever seen), but

rather has a bit lopped off at the top. I conclude that the lens

is actually designed to allow mounting on the Mamiya Press G, or

possibly some later model with similar characteristics. The rangefinder coupling of the Mamiya Press G does work with the 75mm.

The little screw on the 75mm lens looks like it's designed to

help align it properly when mounting on the Mamiya Universal, but

the lens mounts fine without it. Maybe it's also meant to prevent

mounting on some incompatible accessory (an extension tube?).
