October is a great time to visit Maine, with the frequently clear skies and vibrant foliage. I live here and I never get tired of the locations we have (well, maybe in late winter, a.k.a. mud season). Here are some links that should prove helpful for your photo expedition to Maine:

The Maine Audubon Society, which has many, varied sanctuaries that are open to the public, with easy trails, etc. Click on the link, then go to the blue bar at the bottom of the screen and click on "Sanctuaries."

Ft. Williams Park - Portland Head Light

State of Maine's "Visiting Maine" page

And hey, how about a pitch for the Portland Camera Club, a group of wonderful people from whom I have learned a lot. Visitors are always welcome at our meetings.

Photographically speaking, you can't go wrong with October in Maine. Have a good trip, Paul!

Hi, Paul.

Maine is a great place to go as a photographer, especially in October. You're either not going to want to come home, or you'll feel compelled to go back to Maine as soon as possible. But be prepared for two sets of clothes every day ... it can be warm during the day and then pretty cold at night.

I have two articles on my website about photography locations in Maine, if you want to check them out: one's on Acadia National Park, the other's about the town of Rockland.

Have a great time.

Thanks, there are some interesting places there, the portland lighthouse is spooky, looks just like the portland bill light house here in the UK, but there are some good places to start there, I`ve no idea where i`m going in Maine as my girlfirend is booking it up in Boston, so untill I fly in I just won`t know, but looking forward to it, camera a ready..

Thanks again for the suggestions

The coast, the coast, the coast. Simply put, the Maine coast is amazing. The southern Maine coast (York, Ogunquit, Wells) has the nice sandy beaches, and the cool little beach towns, that will be a little less touristy in October (most of the tourists will be in the mountains checking out the foliage). Once you get up past Cape Elizabeth you hit the rocky Maine coast. Lots of cool harbors and fishing towns.

For specifics: Southern Maine: Ogunquit, Kennebunkport are cool, albeit a bit touristy. York Beach is a cool little town as well.

Further North: Bath Maine, Reid State Park, Popham Beach (think it is also a state park), Rockland, Camden. The Islands are good for a daytrip, take the ferry (1.5 hours) from Rockland to Vinalhaven or North Haven, they leave several times a day. I enjoy just driving up Route 1 and stopping whenever I feel like it, plenty of cool little towns.

Hi,

Yea i was looking round the coast there looks like there are some nice little islands that way as well, trouble is with a place this size, i won`t see half i want to, always the way though, you run out of holidays well before you run out of photo opportunities. .

looking forward to it .. thanks .

im not sure where your headed in maine, but i know one spot you should definetely spend at least a few hours at. There is a campground/beach off of bath, maine called Hermit island, park your car, and walk around the island...there are so many different beaches which you will most likely have to yourself with tons of deer

Here's one idea for a Maine island experience: Peaks Island is a quick ferry trip from Portland. It's a residential island (almost a suburban/commuter island for Portland), but it's still an island community with some wooded interiors and an open, rough coastline facing east. The ferry runs regularly - here's the link.

I just came back from a trip to Acadia. It is a nice park for photography, lots of granite/ocean/sunset shots. The Bass Harbor lighthouse is a tough shot, unless you happen to be there at low tide, or there's another way, you pretty much end up shooting into the setting sun.
