Madrones in the San Francisco Bay Area

When I went to San Juan Island I made some interesting closeups of

madrone bark. I'd like to do some more. I live in the San

Francisco Bay Area (East Bay) and can find a few madrones within

walking distance of my house, but the bark, while pretty at a

distance, is not anywhere near as interesting close up as those on

San Juan.

Please tell me of any good sites that you have found.

Try Bear Creek Road behind Orinda. Once you climb the hill and are running along the top ridge, look along the side of road on the resevoir side. Otherwise, best I've seen is at the Bonny Doon Preserve. HTH. <br>

It has been a few years since I have been there, but the largest madrone I have ever seen is a part of this hike:

The texture on this tree was both varied and incredible. Again it has been awhile, so I can't guarantee results.
