kristian dowling
So that after a silly man like you looses it, you'll be thankful it wasn't the price of a metal-titanium piece...need I say more?
lucien1
Only on the M7. Normal, it's the more advanced M.
Sanford
Too bad - my M6 battery cover is starting to show some really beautiful brassing on the fine edges - a pleasure you will never know.
jay_.
<<Normal, it's the more advanced M.>> They should sell malpractice insurance for spin doctors. There is *absolutely* no reason other than cutting manufacturing costs that the M7's battery cap (and, I might add, the place on the body where it bayonets into)are made from cheap, injection-molded plastic. It could have used a metal thread-in cap. Or the bayonet could have been metal, with or without a spring-loaded release catch. Or it could have been attached to the body by a metal hinge and had a metal spring-loaded catch. Lots of ways other than cheap plastic. But Leica's engineers were too busy copying parts from the M2 for the upcoming MP. My suggestion for M7 owners is to put one of those "Kap Keeper" thingys on the battery cover, like they make so you don't lose a lenscap.
roger_michel
there actually was an engineering reason for making the battery cap out of a nonconductive material. it is discussed at length in numerous archive threads. the real question is why is the m7 battery cover the same price as the metal m6 cover? bobtodrick
Do you guys really have nothing better to do than worry about crap like this??!! For once all I can say is 'phil...where are you'.
awahlster
WOW I'm so glad I shoot screw mount leicas and that way I only have to waste my time reading about this little tiny unimportant stuff all you fancy M shooters worry about. Try drinking more I hear it numbs the senses.

steve_brantley2
If the M7 battery cover is indeed made of plastic (which doesn't bother me at all), then I have learned something here today (albeit not a major issue), and I think that Kamol's question is useful and informative. jay_.
<<there actually was an engineering reason for making the battery cap out of a nonconductive material>> The cap and battery compartment could have been metal with plastic insulation. The reason Leica (and their apologists)tout the value of paying $2500 for technologically-anachronistic bodies is how uncompromising their attention to quality is. The battery compartment and cap of the M7 just don't uphold that philosophy.

steve_barnett2
Fondlers or camera snobs may be up in arms against plastic, but I can't see a problem for users. It works OK.
travis1
Wait, we are talking about a battery cap, right?
jay_.
Right, the first battery cap in Leica's history that isn't threaded metal, but rather a piece of cheap plastic with tiny plastic tabs that very softly click into an equally-cheap plastic opening with less than 1/4 turn. They work fine, they just aren't in keeping with the image Leica tries to spin in order to justify the prices they charge.
dave_flanagan
Sounds like an opportunity for a third-party like Tom Abrahamsson or Lutz K. to set up their CNC, make a hundred metal caps, and sell them at 50x cost. If I knew how, I would.<p> Cheers,<br>Dave
jay_.
Actually that would make matters worse. The opening to the battery compartment is also cheap plastic, therefore a metal battery cap would wear out the flange quickly and the cap would come loose and fall off. john_morris4
Wow! Even my cheap little Bessa has a metal battery cover. And the battery cover is so cleverly placed that the camera has a self timer on the front, just like my M3. Certainly, this is not a reason to avoid the M7, but it's still kindof sad. stephen_w.
John, What is the self-timer for? I'm really curious - 10 sec. shutter lag anyone? <8*)>
kelly_hicks1
Cause if it wasn't plastic it would costs even more money!!

andrew_hall1
"The battery compartment and cap of the M7 just don't uphold that philosophy." Jay, let's not forget that Leica invariably abuses the term "philosophy" in virtually all their marketing BS.
